Weinregion Bordeaux:
Mit dem Bordeaux oder auch Bordelais verbindet man seit jeher qualitativ hochwertigste Weine und große Namen. Das Bordeaux ist für Qualitätswein das größte zusammenhängende Weinanbaugebiet weltweit. Die über 3000 Weingüter werden "Chateaux" genannt, wobei jedes Chateaux in der Regel nur einen Erstwein produziert, einige noch einen Zweitwein. (Einige Weingüter produzieren Erst- und Zweitwein in rot und weiß). Die Region ist bekannt für trockene, langlebige Rotweine, die je nach Anbaugebiet mal kräftiger oder sanfter ausfallen. Die Weine sind vor allem als gute Essensbegleiter zu verstehen.
Neben den Rotweinen ist das Bordelais auch für seine hochwertigen edelsüßen Sauternes bekannt.

The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and mineral laced. Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.

The 2019 Pape-Clément was a real show-stopper from barrel. Now in bottle since summer 2021, it has a more refined nose that I feel is perhaps just a little closed in as it approaches its first winter. Aeration reveals some lovely rose petal and incense aromas (there’s something almost Burgundian, Morey-Saint-Denis–like about its purity). The palate is extremely well balanced with velvety tannins and perfectly judged acidity. The oak (65% new, in the form of 400-liter barrels that have been employed since 2018) are beautifully integrated. This fans out wonderfully on the finish. One of the finest releases from Pape-Clément in recent years.

The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. This Haut-Bailly feels pure and classic in style. offering well-judged acidity and a sophisticated. quite tensile finish that lingers long in the mouth. I suspect this might close down in a year or two and deserves perhaps 8 to 10 years in bottle to show what it can really do. The best Haut-Bailly in the modern era? For certain.

This is a beautiful, classic expression of this terroir, and its dense purple hue is followed by gorgeous black cherry and cassis fruits interwoven with ample tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, earth, truffle, and floral nuances. While 2018 was a hot, dry year (at the end of the season anyway), this shows a mix of cooler-climate, vibrant aromatics paired with a rich, concentrated, fresh style on the palate. It has plenty of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. A beautiful, elegant 2018, it's going to need 5-7 years of bottle age and keep for 3-4 decades.

It is a blend of 51% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvigon and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in 30% new oak and the remainder one year old barrels. This includes 25% whole berry fruit. It offers plenty of brambly black fruit on the nose, crushed violets, fresh fig and a touch of spice that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, neatly integrated oak, a little plushness on the entry thanks to the Merlot, and then it dovetails into a more structured, gently grippy, chalk-textured finish with attractive black fruit. Give this two or three years in bottle just to shave off a little abrasiveness and you will have a fine Pessac-Léognan.

Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Inky dark fruit, licorice, graphite, lavender, dried herbs and rose petal build into the sumptuous, creamy finish. Usually I advise cellaring Feytit-Clinet, but that will be less necessary in 2019. As always, Feytit-Clinet is one of the most distinctive wines in the Right Bank.

Das Château Gazin befindet sich an der Stelle des "L'Hospital de Pomeyrols", das im 12. Jahrhundert von den Rittern des Heiligen Johannes von Jerusalem erbaut wurde, um Pilger auf ihrem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela aufzunehmen. Das Anwesen gehört der Familie Bailliencourt dit Courcol, Nachkommen der Hohen Vererber von Landas, einer der ältesten Familien in Artois (Nordfrankreich), deren Wappen sie tragen.

Der Spitzname "Courcol" (Kurzpass) wurde einem von ihnen 1214 von Philippe-Auguste, König von Frankreich, für einen Waffenakt während der Schlacht von Bouvines gegeben. Seitdem lautet das Familienmotto: "war kraft Courcol".
Das Château Gazin befindet sich im nordöstlichen Teil des Pomerol-Plateaus zwischen Châteaux Pétrus und Lafleur-Gazin auf einem Terroir aus Gunziennes-Kies und blauen und grünen Tonen mit Eisenoxiden. Die Reben werden auf traditionelle Weise unter voller Berücksichtigung der Umwelt angebaut: Pflügen, organische Düngemittel, begründete Bekämpfung von Weinschädlingen, "sexuelle Verwirrung", manuelle Ernte ... Sowohl im Weinberg als auch im Keller wird der größte Respekt vor der Tradition mit modernen Techniken kombiniert, um eine konstante Qualität und den vollen Ausdruck dieses außergewöhnlichen Terroirs zu gewährleisten.

Die Ernte wird in kleinen Zementfässern vinifiziert und anschließend 18 Monate in Eichenfässern gereift. Ein zweiter Wein, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, wurde 1986 kreiert, um die Partien von jüngeren Parzellen zu trennen und die Typizität des schlammigen Teils dieses wunderschönen Weinbergs auszudrücken. Die Weine sind geschmeidig und elegant und immer bereit, Kenner auf der ganzen Welt zu verzaubern.
