The best wine so far (although I suspect the 2015 may ultimately enter the picture as well) is the nearly perfect 2013 Promontory Estate. It is simply richer and fuller. with greater integration of tannin. and tastes spectacular. With an opaque. dense purple color and notes of graphite. wet rocks. blackberry and blueberry fruit. some charcoal. and again. loads of spice and loamy soil nuances. the wine has great intensity. a full-bodied texture. and finely grained. sweet tannin. This is a stunner and again. accessible. but its best days are probably a good decade away. as this could very well turn out to be a 40- to 50-year wine.

The 2013 Promontory was utterly spellbinding when I tasted it last year. Since then. it has totally shut down after its recent bottling. Beams of mountain tannin and salinity give the wine its vibrancy. energy and pure mineral-driven intensity. Graphite. leather. game. smoke and dark stone fruit overtones start to take shape. but the 2013 is in no mood to show all of its cards. The 2013 is the most brilliant wine made yet at Promontory. and it has plenty of upside.

Bottled in January 2019, the 2016 Insignia is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is a little reticent to begin, needing a fair bit of coaxing to reveal beautifully beguiling notions of wild blueberries, warm blackberries, black currant cordial, cloves and cedar chest with nuances of camphor, yeast extract, charcuterie and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and depth, revealing loads of subtle floral, black fruit and earthy layers with a firm, very finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. 13,400 cases were made.

A barrel sample made up of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec to be aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reticent at this still nascent stage (to be bottled in January 2019), opening out to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers and compelling herbal sparks, featuring a firm, fine-grained backbone and bags of freshness lifting the finish. 13,500 cases are expected to be made.

Lovely density and intensity with dark berries, blueberries and inky undertones with hints of spice, chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a flavorful finish. The texture and length are fantastic here. Complex. Hints of smoky wood at the end. This needs three to five years more in bottle age. Exciting wine. Try after 2022.

The 2016 Insignia has turned out beautifully. Silky, layered and positively striking, the 2016 is magnificent. In this vintage. Insignia is especially silky. refined and understated, which is unusual for this wine that has often been more bombastic. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it needs at least several years in bottle to be at its very best, but this is all finesse and class.

The 2012 Promontory. which is the softest vintage to date. was slightly better this year than last year. as it had rounded out. It does not have the depth of the 2013. but it is a great wine on its own merits. Notes of new saddle leather. loamy soil. and crushed rock intermingle with blackcurrants. plum. tobacco leaf and spice in a full-bodied. wonderfully pure and large-scaled style with ripe. well-integrated tannin. It is accessible enough to enjoy. and in spite of its massiveness. it is certainly capable of evolving beautifully for 30 or more years.

Die Aromatik ist klar und offen. Cassis. dunkle Waldbeeren. schwarzbeerig mit einer kühlen und mentholartigen Frische ausgestattet. gibt dieser 2012 Promontory schon etwas mehr seiner Klasse preis als es der 2010er tut. Die Aromatik ist unglaublich komplex. feine süssliche Noten lassen sich erforschen. vor allem am Gaumen zeigt er eine tolle Frucht. Für mich besitzt er im direkten Vergleich zum 2010er etwas mehr Komplexität und Finesse. Das Finale ist locker 60+ Sekunden lang. Ein grosser Napa Cabernet. der am Beginn seiner Evolution steht. Gesamtproduktion 1200 Cases.

Impressive now but one for the cellar. New classic for Napa. Better after 2022.

I knew it was only a matter of time before Davide Cilli would make a wine at Promontory that would represent the maximum expression of this rugged hillside site. The 2014 Promontory has been exceptional in the past. but it has also gained another gear or two over the last year. which is pretty much now standard for these wines. Stunningly delineated and precise. with tremendous purity and exceptional balance. the 2014 Promontory dazzles from start to finish. This is an especially translucent style. one that is more about persistence and balance than power alone. Stated simply. the 2014 Promontory is towering achievement from one of Napa Valley's most talented young winemakers. Kudos to the Harlan family and the winegrowing team led by Bob Levy and Cory Empting for creating the framework that allowed Cilli to craft this exquisite. riveting Cabernet Sauvignon.
