Tasted from barrel, the 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia will be presented in the fall but won’t hit the market until spring of the following year. This is a beauty, so generous and opulent with fully seamless transitions. The wine’s traditional blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with tiny percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although this warm vintage makes due with a pinch less of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is selected across 107 hectares of Ornellaia vines, although the estate recently purchased an additional eight hectares next to Guado al Tasso in Castagneto Carducci, with terraces and vines aged between 15 and 28 years old. This broad and generous expression has a beautiful quality of fruit and oak that speaks to the very best of Italian winemaking.

Januar 2023:
The 2020 Ornellaia is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new French oak for 18 months, with another 12 months in bottle prior to release. Flush with herbs and menthol, blackberry, and cedar, it is full bodied and fills the sides of the mouth with rounded fruit of luxurious plum, black cherry, and toast, with supple and velvety tannins. Drink 2026-2046.

This is a beautiful expression of coastal Tuscany and the sunny Mediterranean. The Ornellaia 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia (a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot) pours from the bottle with a specific darkness that has elements of both inky saturation and ruby highlights. The wine is saturated and rich—this is something you notice off the bat—but it also reveals a pleasing lightness or grace that is transmitted to both the bouquet and the palate. Dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum mingle with more substantial aromas of spice, leather and sweetly cured tobacco. The tannins are beautifully managed, and the wine sports considerable heft and density on the palate that drives a very long and pleasurable mouthfeel.

It's a gorgeous wine in every facet, offering a translucent ruby hue as well as a gorgeous bouquet of redcurrants, black cherries, tobacco, dried herbs, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has remarkable purity as well as depth, spot-on balance, ripe, building, yet perfectly integrated tannins, and a great, great finish. This is a wonderfully complete, balanced, ripe yet elegant Ornellaia that will cruise for 30+ years in cold cellars.

Die Hinweise der Tenuta di Biserno zu Weinbau und Weinbereitung: "Der Jahrgang 2021 begann mit einem milden Winter mit durchschnittlichen Niederschlägen. Das Knospen begann langsam im Frühling, der sich durch unterdurchschnittliche Temperaturen auszeichnete, unterbrochen von warmem Wetter Ende März und Anfang April. Der Regen entfaltete seine wohltuende Wirkung ab April und nahm dann zwischen Mai und Oktober ab. Dank der stetigen Arbeit der Teams und der Temperaturschwankungen zwischen Tag und Nacht haben die Reben keinen Wasserstress erlitten. Der Jahrgang 2021 des Tenuta di Biserno bestätigt die bemerkenswerte Ausgewogenheit dieses großen Rotweins. Die Lese begann mit dem Merlot ab der ersten Septemberwoche, gefolgt von Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot und schließlich Cabernet Sauvignon Anfang Oktober. Auf dem Rüttelband werden die Trauben sorgfältig selektiert, entrappt und gequetscht. Jede Sorte wird streng getrennt in Stahltanks gemäß einer genauen Auswahl nach Parzellen vinifiziert. Auf die alkoholische Gärung, die etwa 3-4 Wochen dauert, folgt dann die malolaktische Gärung. Ein Anteil von 60% des Weins reift 12 Monate in neuen und zweiten französischen Eichenfässern, das restliche Volumen verbleibt in Stahlbehältern."

The Tenuta di Biserno 2021 Il Pino di Biserno is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet-adjacent aromas come through nicely with dark fruit, blackberry and exotic spice. The wine is full-bodied in texture and structure, although it manages slightly more contained richness on the mid-palate. That gives Il Pino a more accessible disposition. It closes with a bright note of sweet cherry.
