The 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is quite powerful and dense. Aging. and specifically. the barrel regime of 18 months in oak (60% new) has left the 2016 with a heavy toast/torrefaction quality that at present overpowers the dark fruit and Cabernet aromatics the wine showed from barrel. Frankly. I liked the 2016 more en primeur.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Lynch Bages comes charging out of the gate with pronounced cassis. chocolate-covered cherries. mulberries and menthol notions. backed up by scents of garrigue. tilled soil and a waft of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied. rich and fantastically concentrated. the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm. ripe. grainy tannins with tons of pepper. cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly. a legendary Lynch Bages!

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

A stellar wine. the 2016 Lynch-Bages is dark and explosive in the glass. Beams of tannin and bright acids give the 2016 its sense of drive and tension. From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

Full-bodied. dense and structured with lots of ripe tannins and a long. flavorful finish of currants and forest floor. combined with fresh mushrooms and bark. The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a powerful. exciting wine. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to be patient. as the 2016 shows very little of the upfront appeal that was so evident when it was in barrel. In the glass. the 2016 is sumptuous. vivid and incredibly detailed. with generous super-ripe red fruit and floral notes that develop with time. The wine's concentration and vibrancy lead me to think it will enjoy a very long life. Wow!

The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste gives up pure kirsch and red and black currants with violets and baking spices. Medium-bodied. firm and grainy. it's very expressive with good concentration and length.

A neoclassical edition of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. this has cedar. graphite. deeply integrated cedar and spicy-oak influence and a very fresh array of ripe blackberries. dark cherries and cassis. The palate is so seamless. It builds beautifully and delivers a long. seamless array of perfectly ripe dark fruit. swathed in fine. firm. ascending layers of tannins. As good as we have seen in recent vintages. this is a star of the vintage. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon Baron is seamless and racy from start to finish. Sensual and super-expressive. with soft contours. silky tannins and exceptional finesse. Pichon Baron is one of the more accessible wines in its peer group today. Plum. mocha. leather. spice and chocolate all build effortlessly. As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants. black plum preserves. truffles. tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied. firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits. it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.
