This wine shows beautiful clarity and class on the nose with roses, tar, currants, green and black olives and plums. It’s exceptionally fine-tannined with such polish and finesse. So sophisticated and intense for this vintage. Long, chewy finish, yet this is mouth-filling and caressing. Pure merlot. Try after 2024.

Messorio is a wine that beautifully reflects the characteristics of the vintage and is a very accurate measuring stick of how any single vintage will eventually perform both in terms of near-term accessibility and long-term cellar aging. That said, the Le Macchiole 2017 Messorio plays its strongest cards in terms of mouthfeel and texture, revealing a robust structure and firmly integrated tannins that come from both the richly concentrated fruit and the careful use of oak. The wine shows a heavy center of gravity and a solid base of dark fruit that is enhanced by caramel, brown sugar, spice and creamy blackberry preserves. It does offer immediate appeal, but I'd wait a few more years to give this 2017 Messorio more time to flesh out and evolve.

The 2017 Messorio (100% Merlot) is classy and polished to the core. It is also incredibly young and not at all forthcoming. Messorio is a wine that needs a surprising amount of time in bottle to truly shine. I expect that will be the case here as well. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit and density. Time in the cellar should allow for its aromatics to emerge more fully. Overall, though, this is a fairly restrained style, in keeping with the showing of 2017 Bolgheri reds more broadly. All the elements come together so gracefully in this striking wine. Production is down around 20%.

Der Paleo 2017 Rosso aus der Region Bolgheri ist eine weitere Schöpfung im Le Macchiole Sortiment. Der Paleo Rosso 2017 von Le Macchiole ist ein aus 100% Cabernet Franc vinifizierter Rotwein, der stets ein paar Jahre brauch um zu voller Grosse aufzusteigen. Als erstes Weingut in der Bolgheri wagte es damals Le Macchiole einen reinen Cabernet Franc zu kreieren, den Paleo Rosso. Es passt sehr gut in die Philosophie des Weinguts Le Macchiole rebsortenreine Weine zu erzeugen. Neben dem Scrio einem reinen Syrah und dem Messorio einem reinen Merlot ist der Paleo Rosso der dritte im Bunde eben aus 100% Cabernet Franc. Sicherlich ist der Messorio der teuerste Wein im Portfolio, der wahre Star und auch der wohl wichtigste Wein bei Le Macchiole ist der Paleo Rosso. In einigen Jahren übertrumpft der Paleo dann auch den Messorio der oft mehr als das doppelte des Paleo kostet.

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

The 2017 Paleo Rosso is superb. It is also the wine in this range that seems to have handled the rigors of 2017 best. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan Coast. The aromatics alone are so alluring. Sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar give Paleo its aromatic lift. Some varietal character has been baked out because of the heat of the year. In exchange, readers will find a Paleo Rosso that will drink well with just a year or two in bottle. The 2017 was fermented in cement and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 90% new with light toast.

Released to much fanfare amidst growing popularity for this entry-level appellation on the Tuscan coast, the Le Macchiole 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is a beautiful specimen, thanks to its honest simplicity and its charming approach. The wine reveals good fruit complexity with blue and purple berries contrasted against toasted spice and baked earth. But if anything truly stands out here, it is the expert integration and generally seamlessness of the wine's various moving parts. This is a terrific wine to uncork for a fun family meal with pasta and grilled meats around the kitchen table.

Die Grenzen des Machbaren neu definiert

Das hat sich die Genossenschaft aus Kurtatsch auf die Fahnen geschrieben. Und mit dem Tres, einem Cuvée aus Merlot, Cabernet Franc und Cabernet Sauvignon denn auch realisiert. Der Jahrgang 2016 ist nach 2015 erst die zweite Abfüllung. Und darf schon jetzt zu den icon wines gezählt werden. So schreibt Robert Camuto im Wine Spectator (Dezember 2023): "Ich habe den Wein in einer Blindverkostung verkostet, bei der er sich sehr gut geschlagen hat - elegant und würzig, mit einem ausgewogenen Reichtum - gegen denselben Jahrgang von Klassikern wie dem Chateau Pâvie St.-Emilion aus Bordeaux (97 Punkte), dem Le Macchiole Toscana Messorio aus der Toskana (96 Punkte) und dem Opus One aus dem Napa Valley (94 Punkte)."

Auch bei unserer Degustation im Juni 2024 hinterließ der Kurtatsch 2016 Tres DOC Südtirol mächtig Eindruck. Vielschichtiges Aromenspektrum aus fruchtigen, floralen, würzigen und balsamischen Noten, ausgesprochen harmonischer Geschmack mit samtigen Tannin, einer unglaublichen Präsenz am Gaumen und einem nicht enden wollenden Abgang. Da haben wir gerne immer wieder nachgeschenkt. Und den Wein für Sie ins Programm genommen.

"Der Tres 2016 ist eine strahlende Schönheit. Eine Kaskade von schwarzen Himbeeren und Pflaumen erhebt sich aus dem Glas, akzentuiert von rauchigen Noten von Piment, Nelken, gegrilltem Salbei und Graphit. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich mit einer samtigen Textur und Noten von dunkelroten Früchten, die von Veilchen, Blüten und Kakao begleitet werden, sowie von langsam ansteigenden Tanninen, die zum Ende hin an Spannung gewinnen. Der 2016er endet strukturiert und dennoch kühl und frisch, noch lange nicht fertig, aber dennoch einladend mit einem herben Brombeer-Ton und knackigen mineralischen Noten."

Die Cantina erklärt: "Die qualitative Krönung der Weinbaulagen in Kurtatsch ist die warme und steile Lage Brenntal. Dank des großen Tag/Nacht Temperaturunterschieds und der idealen Böden für die Sorten Merlot, Cabernet Franc und Cabernet Sauvignon, entsteht eine unnachahmliche alpin-mediterrane Cuvée. In den allerbesten Jahrgängen werden die drei ältesten und besten Parzellen unserer drei wichtigsten Sorten unter niedrigsten Ertragsmengen geerntet und vinifiziert. Der Wein bekommt dann im Fass und in der Flasche so lange Zeit, bis sich das ideale Trinkfenster öffnet. Drei Werte, symbolisiert durch drei Zypressen und das Beste aus drei Rebsorten in einem Wein vereint: Tres.

Und das Sahnehäubchen: Das Etikett jeder einzelnen der 2.990 abgefüllten Flaschen (zuzüglich einiger Magnums) ist ein Unikat. Denn, um die Wertigkeit dieses Weines sowie die Terroirverbundenheit bestmöglich zum Ausdruck zu bringen, wurde jede einzelne Flasche von der Kurtatscher Künstlerin Carmen Maria Alber mit der Erde des Weinberges handbemalt. Jeder Jahrgang erhält ein eigenes Motiv, der Jahrgang 2016 zeigt die "Millawand", die charakteristische Felswand aus Dolomit, auf der das Dorf Kurtatsch thront.

There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible.

A wine of breathtaking beauty, the 2016 Paleo Rosso possesses off the charts vertical intensity. Sweet floral and spiced notes soar out of the glass in a stunning wine endowed with fabulous depth in all of its dimensions. Cedar, mocha, rose petal, red plum and menthol are bright and beautifully sculpted. Paleo Rosso shows just how profound Cabernet Franc can be on the Tuscan Coast. This is a superb edition of the wine that. in my view, is the Macchiole flagship. The 2016 saw 30-35 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in cement and 18 months in French oak.
