Pure perfection from Paso Robles, the 2019 Estate Cuvee checks in as 50% Syrah, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Petit Verdot that was raised in 81% new French oak. Incredible cassis and black berry fruits as well as violets, chocolate, graphite, and who knows what else emerges from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated yet weightless mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s more seamless and approachable than the more backward, structured 2018 and will have two decades of prime drinking.

Stephan Asseo, who’s assisted more and more by assistant winemaker Patrick Davies, continues to keep his L’Aventure estate near the top of the pyramid in Paso Robles. This report looks at the 2019s and 2020s, and both appear to be beautiful vintages. The 2019s are some of the finest wines I’ve tasted at this estate and have a rare mix of power and vibrancy, with incredible aromatics and sensational purity and precision on the palate.

The pure currant and blackberry aromas are so bright and vivid. Very aromatic. Lots of pure fruit. It’s full-bodied with tension and focus, because the tannins are fine-grained and give form and energy to the wine. They are very long already. I think three or four years will really bring this red into its own. Blend of syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Try after 2024, but hard to not drink now.

A barrel sample blended of 53% Syrah. 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Optimus is deep ruby-purple in color and scented of crème de cassis, baked blackberries, chocolate mint, wet clay. crushed blueberries and faint notions of lilac with an undercurrent of exotic spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lovely layering of spiced black and blue fruits, a detailed, finely pixelated frame and great freshness, finishing with loads of ripe fruit. I can’t wait to taste this from bottle!

"The 2018 Optimus marks the 20th vintage of our signature “crazy” blend. Back in 1998, when we started this journey in Paso Robles. Stephan had a vision or in his own words a “fantasy” of the blend he wanted to make. The blend was inspired in part from drinking Syrah/Cabernet blends and in other part from realizing that Petit Verdot was unbelievable in California and always ripe due to the optimal weather conditions. In 1998, with a half-built winery, purchased fruit from Paso Robles, and an idea in mind, the first vintage Optimus was made. This special blend is the reason why Stephan wanted to leave France and move somewhere where he had the freedom to make any type of blends. Today. the Optimus serves as the introduction to our lineup. Approachable and pleasurable, the Optimus makes you want to know more…

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of this spectacular wine, we have created a special anniversary label. The 2018 Optimus features a reverse label. with a navy background and our L’Aventure logo embossed in a silver/gold foil. Extremely aromatic with ripe cherry and berry aromas, as well as flowers and citrus. Medium to full body with fine, polished tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is really well done and one of the most balanced L’Aventures I have encountered. Syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years.

Der Optimus von L‘Aventure besteht aus 57% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon und 12% Petit Verdot mit 14,5 Vol.-%. Superviskose, dunkle Farbe. Im Geruch besitzt der Optimus viel Nord Rhône-Charakter wie ein Côte-Rôtie, sehr saftig und komplex. Und auch im Mund besitzt er eine saftig-satte Struktur mit leb- haft-frischer Säure, die leicht aufgesetzt wirkt. Mit guter Würze und stumpfen Gerb- stoffen zeigt er sich sehr geschliffen und ein wenig konstruiert. Mit 90% neuen Barriques ist der Optimus noch jung.

Moving to the wines from bottle and starting with the 2016 Optimus, which is always a great introduction into the wines of this estate, it’s a blend of 50% Syrah. 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot that spent 14 months in 60% new barrels. This full-bodied, rich yet also elegant and lively red gives up a big, sweet nose of crème de cassis, toasted spice, licorice, and graphite. With good acidity and impressive finesse and elegance as well as richness, it’s a no-brainer purchase to drink over the coming 7-8 years.

Optimus ist der perfekte Einstieg in unser Sortiment. Auch bekannt als unsere „verrückte“ Paso-Cuvée, besticht Optimus durch eine wunderschöne Balance und viel Frische. Dieser Wein ist bereits in jungen Jahren zugänglich, kann aber auch bis zu einem Jahrzehnt genossen werden.

Reife Brombeeren, Cassis und Pflaumenschalen, begleitet von Blutorange, Anisette und nassen Steinen. Vollmundig mit kompakten, raffinierten Tanninen und samtiger Textur. Großzügig und reichhaltig mit einem tiefen Kern aus schwarzen Früchten und einem würzigen, schokoladigen Abgang. Wirklich gut gemacht. Eine Mischung aus 55 % Syrah, 27 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 18 % Petit Verdot. Trinken oder lagern.

Der 2021 Optimus ist eine elegante, polierte Mischung aus 55 % Syrah, 27 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 18 % Petit Verdot. Er benötigt viel Luft, um Aromen von Maraschino-Kirsche, Blaubeere, Leder, Anis, Kiesstaub und Garrigue freizusetzen. Schlank und geradlinig, ich liebe die Textur hier – sanft und so füllend auf eine schmeichelnde Art. Die Tannine sind wunderbar, weich und subtil, und es gibt eine zarte Süße mit herzhaften Noten und einer lebendigen Säure, die Frische verleiht. Der Wein ist schlank und geradlinig, mit wunderschönen, stromlinienförmigen Elementen, nichts zu massiv oder üppig, aber behält die Geschmacksintensität durchgehend bei und endet mit Frische, Biss und Saftigkeit. Das gefällt mir sehr, er bemüht sich nicht zu sehr, zu gefallen. Glänzend und strahlend. Blumig und mit Finesse.

The 2018 Estate Cuvee checks 45% Syrah. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% Petit Verdot brought up in 90% new French oak. Tasting like the straight Cab. yet with more sex appeal. it offers a huge nose of crème de cassis. white flowers. crushed stone. graphite. and crushed flowers. This carries to a full-bodied. gorgeously textured red with incredible balance. no hard edges. a thrilling mid-palate. and a great. great finish. It's going to benefit from 5-6 years of bottle age and keep for upwards of two decades or more. Hats off to winemaker Stephan Asseo on another incredible wine. as well as. I suspect the wine of the vintage.

A barrel sample blended of 45% Syrah. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot aging in about 90% new oak. the 2018 Estate Cuvée has a very deep ruby-purple color and explodes to crème de cassis. black cherries. blueberry and boysenberry preserves with accents of violet. grilled lamb. dried thyme. coffee. soil and chocolate with exotic spices in the undercurrent. The full-bodied palate is incredibly pixelated and silky with very bold freshness and a long. layered finish. I can't wait to see taste this beauty from bottle.

Stephan Asseo. founder and winemaker at L’Aventure Winery. began making wine in 1982 when he established Domaine Courteillac in Bordeaux. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru) and Chateau Robin (Cotes de Castillion). Over the next 15 years. Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker of fastidious craftsmanship. and gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron. However. his true desire was to be more innovative than AOC law would allow. In 1996. this led him on a quest for a great terroir. where he could pursue his ideal as a winemaker.

After searching for over a year among the world’s great wine fields. Stephan found Paso Robles. He immediately “fell in love” with the unique terroir. The rolling topography of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. the deep calcareous soils. and the maritime influence of the renowned Templeton Gap all combine to produce a world class wine country. with the potential to craft some of the world’s greatest blends. It is here. in Paso Robles. that Stephan began his adventure. “L’Aventure”. His winemaking vision has quickly resulted in wines which have earned high scores and critical acclaim.

Togni's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, verkostet als 10-Jahres-Jubiläumsedition im Weingut, zeigt erste Reife mit komplexen Noten von Erde, Cassis, Mokka, Tabak, Zigarrenkiste und Vanille. Der Wein ist mittel- bis vollmundig, gleichzeitig fest und seidig, mit einem reifen, anhaltenden Abgang. Robert Parker bewertete diesen Wein bei seiner Veröffentlichung mit 94+ Punkten und bezeichnete ihn als einen der zugänglichsten Cabernets von Togni. Ich habe Jahrgänge von Philip Togni bis in die Mitte der 1980er Jahre und sie sind wahrhaft langlebige Klassiker des Napa Valley. Einer der besten Napa Cabernets, die ich je verkostet habe, war der 1969 Chappellet, den Togni bei Chappellet gemacht hat. Seine Weine bestehen die Zeitprobe, sind aber in ihrer Jugend manchmal etwas unzugänglich.

Ein stilvolles Bouquet von schwarzen Früchten, die sich mit Gewürzen, Lebkuchen und Lakritze vermischen. Der weiche, geschmeidige Einstieg am Gaumen führt zu einem Gefühl von sanfter Kraft und luftig-leichtem Volumen, untermauert von kaschmirartigen, seidigen Tanninen, die von einer frischen Säure harmonisch ausgeglichen werden. Im Abgang kommen cremige Vanillenoten mit reifen Früchten zum Vorschein. Dieser Wein verlockt zum zum sofortigen Genuss, aber er wird noch viele Jahre lang gut altern.

The most classical of their wines, the 2015 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche), but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at high altitude. These grapes are always picked last, but the wine has a similar alcohol level as the rest, around 14.5% in a warm year like 2019. The modus operandi is similar to other of the top cuvées—harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemming, optical sorting and fermentation in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in this case is extended to 36 months, and the barrels are only 10% new. This is, year in, year out, my favorite wine from Muga, and in this powerful and ripe year, these late-harvesting vines ripened thoroughly and delivered a full array of aromas and flavors so that the wine has plenty of depth and complexity. It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It's enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. There's no 2012 or 2013 of this. There will be a 2016 and 2019, but no 2017 or 2018. 2020 is still a question mark, they have not yet decided it.

Reserved and polished, this is a Prado Enea with great class and focus. It’s so aromatic,with plum, peach, cherry and cedar character. Salted olives, too. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Elegance with power here. Give it three or four years to open, but already impressive.

Ein wunderbar unkomplizierter Weißwein mit harmonischem Bouquet von gelbem Steinobst, saftiger Birne und hellen Blüten. Am Gaumen ausgesprochen leicht, frisch, trocken und animierend mit einem Hauch Mandel. Der perfekte Hauswein, wie man ihn in anständigen Wirtshäusern in Südtirol serviert bekommt. Er schmeckt als Aperitif auf der Terrasse genauso gut wie zu Vorspeisen mit Frischkäse und Lachs oder leichter Sommerküche. Ein echter Allrounder, mit dem man auch in einer großen Runde nichts falsch machen kann.

Der 448 s.l.m. Bianco ist ein Wein, der durch seine Ausgeglichenheit und Frische, zu einem idealen Apero-Wein wird. Er eignet sich aber durchaus auch zu leichten Vorspeisen. Sehr gutes Preis/Genuss Verhältnis.

Die Kellerei portraitiert ihren Girlan 448 s.l.m. Bianco IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti 2023 so: "Dieser Wein will die Typizität der Weißweine unseres Anbaugebiets zum Ausdruck bringen. Frische, zarte Duftnoten und Gleichgewicht mit einer leichten aromatischen Note kennzeichnen diesen Wein."
