Bottled in January 2019, the 2016 Insignia is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is a little reticent to begin, needing a fair bit of coaxing to reveal beautifully beguiling notions of wild blueberries, warm blackberries, black currant cordial, cloves and cedar chest with nuances of camphor, yeast extract, charcuterie and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and depth, revealing loads of subtle floral, black fruit and earthy layers with a firm, very finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. 13,400 cases were made.

A barrel sample made up of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec to be aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reticent at this still nascent stage (to be bottled in January 2019), opening out to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers and compelling herbal sparks, featuring a firm, fine-grained backbone and bags of freshness lifting the finish. 13,500 cases are expected to be made.

Lovely density and intensity with dark berries, blueberries and inky undertones with hints of spice, chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a flavorful finish. The texture and length are fantastic here. Complex. Hints of smoky wood at the end. This needs three to five years more in bottle age. Exciting wine. Try after 2022.

The 2016 Insignia has turned out beautifully. Silky, layered and positively striking, the 2016 is magnificent. In this vintage. Insignia is especially silky. refined and understated, which is unusual for this wine that has often been more bombastic. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it needs at least several years in bottle to be at its very best, but this is all finesse and class.

2013 was characterized by a very dry spring and a consistently warm summer/early fall. Only 6.4 inches of rainfall were recorded from January to June (versus 17.7 inches average).
Low reserves of soil water limited vine growth. While average temperatures remained warm throughout spring and summer. no heat spikes were recorded in July. August or September.
In terms of thermal time (growing degree days). the season was 18 days ahead of the norm at the beginning of harvest (September 10).

The 2013 Dominus is. to my way of thinking. one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history. both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine. with very low yields of only 3.500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon. 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. offers up notes of cedar wood. forest floor. loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color. super-pure and intense. this wine has low acidity. but ripe. noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years.

Togni's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, verkostet als 10-Jahres-Jubiläumsedition im Weingut, zeigt erste Reife mit komplexen Noten von Erde, Cassis, Mokka, Tabak, Zigarrenkiste und Vanille. Der Wein ist mittel- bis vollmundig, gleichzeitig fest und seidig, mit einem reifen, anhaltenden Abgang. Robert Parker bewertete diesen Wein bei seiner Veröffentlichung mit 94+ Punkten und bezeichnete ihn als einen der zugänglichsten Cabernets von Togni. Ich habe Jahrgänge von Philip Togni bis in die Mitte der 1980er Jahre und sie sind wahrhaft langlebige Klassiker des Napa Valley. Einer der besten Napa Cabernets, die ich je verkostet habe, war der 1969 Chappellet, den Togni bei Chappellet gemacht hat. Seine Weine bestehen die Zeitprobe, sind aber in ihrer Jugend manchmal etwas unzugänglich.

Der Inglenook Rubicon 2013 Napa Valley ist das Flagschiff der Inglenook'schen Cabernets. Im Glas, typisch Cabernet, von einem dunklen Rubin- bis Purpurrot, zeigt sich die Nase mit Aromen von Cassis, Minze, Milchschokolade, Mandel und leichten Röstnoten. Genau das zeigt sich im Jahrgang 2013. Schichten von dunklen Früchten bauen sich zu einem Crescendo von Aromen, Geschmacksnoten und Texturen auf, die mit Anklängen von Mokka, Espresso, Kies und dunklen Gewürzen durchzogen sind. Das neue Holz, das anfangs sehr dominant war, beginnt sich zu integrieren und lässt die Frucht stärker hervortreten als in der Vergangenheit. Dies ist eine herausragende Darbietung für den Rubicon 2013.

Der Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2021 von Favia ist ein reiner Ausdruck dieser renommierten Weinregion. Es ist verständlich, warum Oakville zum am meisten geschätzten Teil des Napa Valley geworden ist (Robert Parker bezeichnete es als das „Filetstück“). Unsere Parzellen bei Oakville Ranch – hoch über dem östlichen Rand des Tals, organisch bewirtschaftet auf roten, felsigen, eisenreichen Böden – haben über viele Jahre hinweg einige der überzeugendsten Weine der Region hervorgebracht. Diese roten Hügel erstaunen uns Jahr für Jahr mit Weinen, die solche Kraft, Intensität und Charakterstärke zeigen.
Dieser reine Cabernet Sauvignon wurde sorgfältig fermentiert und mehr als zwanzig Tage auf den Schalen belassen, dann schonend gepresst und direkt ins Fass für die malolaktische Gärung gegeben. Der Wein reifte 22 Monate in 50 % französischen Eichenfässern, mit minimalem Umfüllen und ohne Schönung oder Filtration. Wir sind der Meinung, dass dieser zurückhaltende Ansatz bei der Élevage die beste Möglichkeit ist, den Fokus auf den Weinberg zu lenken.

Wie immer zeigt dieser Wein dunkle, düstere Noten von Brombeere, Cassis und sonnengetränktem Boden, zusammen mit feinen Anklängen von Gewürzen und Lorbeer. Am Gaumen ist der Einstieg schmal und präzise, doch fast sofort erweitert sich der Eindruck und wird mundfüllend und reichhaltig, was zu einem langen, kraftvollen Abgang führt. Die Tannine sind elegant, aber muskulös, was auf eine lange Lagerfähigkeit im Keller hinweist.

Dieser Wein ist voller Aromen von Graphit, schwarzen Beeren und schwarzen Johannisbeeren. Tief und dunkel. Mittel- bis vollmundig, mit saftigen und vielschichtigen Tanninen und einem geschmackvollen Abgang. Sehr traubenbetont. Präzise und fokussiert. Echter Coombsville-Charakter. Trinkbar und wird sich hervorragend weiterentwickeln.

Der Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville 2021 präsentiert sich in tiefem granat-purpur und explodiert förmlich mit eindrucksvollen Noten von Crème de Cassis, eingemachten Schwarzkirschen und Boysenbeeren, die von Nuancen von Zedernholz, Graphit und Lavendelöl begleitet werden. Der vollmundige Gaumen ist vollgepackt mit intensiven Schichten von schwarzen und blauen Früchten, die von einer festen Linie körniger Tannine und erstaunlicher Spannung unterstützt werden. Der Abgang ist lang und von wunderbarer Reinheit geprägt.

Der Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville 2021 ist ein reinsortiger Wein, der wie alle diese jüngsten 2021er in 50 % neuem französischem Eichenholz ausgebaut wurde. Er zeigt mehr blaue Frucht sowie einen vollmundigen, unglaublich vielschichtigen Stil in seinen kräftigen Aromen und Geschmacksnoten von Graphit, verbrannter Erde, Tabak und ausgeprägter Mineralität. Es ist ein großer, konzentrierter 2021er, der dennoch eine wunderschöne Frische und Balance bewahrt, was meiner Meinung nach diesen Jahrgang besonders auszeichnet. Wie beim La Magdalena ist dieser Wein nicht für diejenigen, die sofortige Befriedigung suchen, da er wahrscheinlich erst ein Jahrzehnt nach dem Jahrgang seine volle Reife erreichen wird. Ich wäre überrascht, wenn er nicht eine Gesamtlebensdauer von 30 Jahren hätte.

So much earth and spice with walnut and wet earth. Like fog laying over the valley in the morning. Black fruit. Medium-to full-bodied with super-fine tannins that are long and persistent, with graceful progression and length on the palate. So long, with real definition. September 2022 release. From biodynamically grown grapes. Hard not to drink now, but will age wonderfully.

The 2019 Proprietary Red Wine is more open and effusive than the 2018 version, with gentle floral nuances set against a backdrop of black cherries and cassis, joined by subtle notes of tobacco, cedar and vanilla. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, streamlined, silky and lush, nicely balanced and elegant, with a long, softly dusty finish tinged with licorice and caramel. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

I was blown away by the 2019 Red Blend from Quintessa, which is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère, this full-bodied beauty has a perfectly balanced, seamless, yet expansive and classic 2019 style as well as gorgeous aromatics of cassis, flowers, chalky minerality, and integrated oak. It’s hard to resist already, but I have no doubt this will evolve for 20 years if stored properly.

Quintessa 2021 Rutherford Napa Valley

Vollmundig, aber nicht überwältigend, mit saftigen Tanninen, die lang und sehr subtil sind. Hervorragender Abgang. Aus biodynamischen Trauben mit Demeter-Zertifizierung. 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carmenere, 1% Merlot und 1% Petit Verdot. Jetzt trinkbar, aber besser im Jahr 2027.

Der fruchtbetonte 2021 Proprietary Red Wine von Quintessa duftet nach Kirschen und Himbeeren mit einem Hauch von Zedernholz und mokkafarbener Eiche und ist im Mund wunderbar weich und geschmeidig. Er ist von mittlerem bis vollem Körper, geschmeidig und seidig, voller Klasse und Eleganz, ohne das Gefühl von übermäßiger Masse oder Rustikalität. Wenn man sich über ihn beschweren könnte (was kaum wahrscheinlich ist), dann wäre es, dass er fast zu poliert, zu elegant und zu leicht zu trinken wirkt.

Der 2021 Proprietary Red schließlich wurde erst im Juli dieses Jahres abgefüllt und besteht zu 91 % aus Cabernet Sauvignon, zu 4 % aus Cabernet Franc, zu 3 % aus Carmenere, der Rest aus Petit Verdot und Merlot, die zu 64 % in neuer französischer Eiche ausgebaut wurden. Er bietet reine blaue Früchte, Frühlingsblumen, Veilchen und würziges Eichenholz, mit einer schönen kalkigen, mineralischen Note, die am Gaumen deutlicher hervortritt. Er ist elegant, vollmundig, hat ultrafeine Tannine, eine gute Säure und eine fantastische Länge. Es ist ein weiterer großartiger Wein, der sich über 15 Jahre entwickeln wird.

Mittel bis vollmundig, geschmeidig und seidig, voller Klasse und Eleganz... Wenn man etwas daran auszusetzen hätte (was kaum wahrscheinlich ist), dann wäre es, dass es fast zu perfekt, zu elegant, zu leicht zu trinken erscheint.

Zarte florale Aromen und eine einzigartige mineralische Dichte

Dieser großartige Champagner stammt ausschließlich von zwei Grand Cru-Lagen im Herzen des Dorfes Avize an den Orten "Chemin de Plivot" und "Chemin de Flavigny". Der Boden ist hier sehr karg und enorm kreidehaltig. Die 50 Jahre alten Rebstöcke können dadurch, und in Verbindung mit ihrem Alter, markant mineralische und zart florale Aromen in den Beeren einlagern. Um diese feingliedrige Stilistik zu erhalten, wird nur ganz schonend abgepresst. Nach der alkoholischen Gärung mit den bei Larmandier-Bernier obligatorischen einheimischen Hefestämmen und der Malo erfolgt eine Reifung auf der Feinhefe für mindestens 5 Jahre. Die Dosage beträgt nur 2 g/l.

Die Aromen erinnern bei ihm an gelben Apfel, Zitrus und exotische Früchte wie Feigen, reife Ananas und kandierte Rosinen. Auf der Gewürzebene entdeckt man beim zweiten Schnuppern dann auch Eindrücke von Zimt, Muskat und etwas weiße Schokolade. Am Gaumen entfalten sich ob des langen Hefekontakts und der naturnahen Vinifizierung beeindruckend lebhafte aber zugleich auch feingliedrige Noten. So entfacht der 'Les Chemins d'Avize' einerseits eine markante Säurestruktur, federt das aber wiederum auch sehr schön mit seiner feincremigen Textur ab. Auch hier wechseln sich die einzelnen Frucht- und Gewürzeindrücke angenehm ab und lassen das Genusserlebnis endlos lange und fein ausklingen.

Zum 2012er Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Chemins d'Avize notierte James Suckling im September 2019: 95 Punkte - "eine sehr reiche Nase mit intensiven gelben Pfirsichen und Zitrusfrüchten, die außergewöhnliche Reife und einige exotische Nuancen zeigen. Am Gaumen ist er verführerisch und rund, sehr ausdrucksstark und mit einer geschmeidigen, weichen und pastetenartigen Textur. Im Abgang Zitronencreme und Kuchenkruste." Aromas of spice, ink, blackberries and currants. Very aromatic! Full-bodied, yet so tight and fresh with firm, velvety tannins. The beautiful center-palate of fruit is so enticing and the finish goes on for minutes. Coolness at the end with blue fruit. Stunning really. Give it time, if you can keep your hands off it. 76% cabernet sauvignon, 16% cabernet franc, and 8% merlot. Best after 2025.

In 2009, Peter Michael purchased the former Showket Vineyard in Oakville, on the hillside below Continuum and above Dalla Valle. That is the source for the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. Matured in 60% new French oak, it's a fairly forward, opulent wine, marked by scents of cigar box, tobacco, cassis, cherries and fine leather. Full-bodied, rich and velvety without being chocolaty or overdone, the lingering finish is—texturally—plush winter-weight flannel pajamas interwoven with complex, faintly herbal threads.

Pym Rae 2016 Napa Valley Tesseron Vineyards

This is the debut vintage of this wine from the esteemed Bordeaux owner, Alfred Tesseron, who bought the property in the Napa mountains in 2016. Aromas of plums, wet earth, fresh herbs and tobacco. Some green olives. Turns to blueberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet reserved and layered with chocolate, walnuts and plums. Firm yet polished tannins give a framed sense to the wine. Savory. Racy and beautifully structured, it’s extremely drinkable already. Real wine.

This is the first vintage off this estate following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard and house by Chateau Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron back in 2016. The estate includes just under 20 acres of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc (7%) vines, planted in 1990. Now officially dubbed “Pym-Rae,” in respect for the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams’s children), the site is perched at an average altitude of 1,500 feet (500 meters) on Mount Veeder. This first vintage off this vineyard is nothing like other wines I have tasted from Mount Veeder. And this makes sense, because to visit the property is to grasp how remote this side of the mountain is, and although this and other vineyards around it have long been in production, until now the fruit has been sold to large wineries and blended away in Napa Valley AVA wines.

Currently, the wines are made at a winery facility up on Howell Mountain, one that I have visited and at which I witnessed the 2016 vintage in production. Tesseron’s number-one demand of a temporary facility to produce his first Napa wine was simple: absolute control. Here he has it, at least until his winery on Mount Veeder has been completed (currently in the planning stages). Thomas Comme, the son of Jean-Michel Comme, the winemaker at Chateau Pontet-Canet, is winemaker and has lived at the estate since 2016. This first 2016 vintage is truly exciting—a sympathetically crafted, evocative expression of this place that is a must-try for readers who are as passionate as I am in discovering another unique expression of this incredibly multifaceted region for the highest quality Bordeaux blends.

The 2014s. where the production of Napanook was only 2.200 cases and Dominus slightly more than the 2015 at 4.000 cases. was another early harvest. although somewhat later than 2015. The 2014 Dominus. which is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon. 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot really struts its stuff. Moueix’s belief in dry farming seems to be paying off with stronger and stronger vintages, each successive year, and the 2014 is a sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine with notes of red and blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, spice box and licorice. The color is a dense plum/ruby/purple, much like the Napanook. This is a beauty that is already drinking gorgeously – as most 2014s are – and will continue to evolve for 25 or so years.

The 2014 Dominus is endowed with tons of depth, power and muscle. Black cherry, plum, smoke, menthol, licorice, chocolate, dried herbs and dark spices are all pushed forward. Deep, pliant and exquisitely layered, the 2014 possesses tons of concentration and mid-palate depth. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2014 comes across as a hybrid of 2013 and 2012. I very much like the energy and focus in this wine. This is a fabulous wine in every way. With time in the glass, the flavors gain in brightness and focus. There is certainly much to look forward to.

Im Jahr 1990 überarbeitete Maté Brajkovich das Land und pflanzte einen neuen Weinberg mit Chardonnay-Reben an der Stelle des ursprünglichen Weinbergs, den er und seine Familie im März 1944 erworben hatten. Die ersten Trauben aus diesem Weinberg wurden im März 1993 geerntet, dem Jahr nach dem Tod von Maté. Der daraus resultierende Wein wurde im November 1994 anlässlich der Feierlichkeiten zum fünfzigsten Jahrestag der Ankunft der Familie Brajkovich am Kumeu River veröffentlicht.

Gorgeous precise aromas of apples, white peaches, some minerals, flint and stone. Subtle mangoes, too. Full-bodied but so intense and driven with a salty undertone and a driving finish. Some white pepper at the end with citrus skin. Focused and intense. Great finish. Better after 2026 but already fantastic. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The nose on this 2022 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay leads with candied bananas, pineapple husk, white peach and a hint of lychee, and the edges of the aromatics are feathered with preserved citrus, brine, curry leaf and apple skins. In the mouth, the wine is powered by supercharged fruit; it is crystalline in its way, an attribute that I have long-since associated with the Chardonnays from Kumeu River. The flavor is sapid and palate-staining, with just enough salt and savory spices in the fruit to make it super complex as well as powerful. It is precisely folded like origami, each crease in service of the overall shape.* A wine that offers much and assumes nothing. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
