2013 was characterized by a very dry spring and a consistently warm summer/early fall. Only 6.4 inches of rainfall were recorded from January to June (versus 17.7 inches average).
Low reserves of soil water limited vine growth. While average temperatures remained warm throughout spring and summer. no heat spikes were recorded in July. August or September.
In terms of thermal time (growing degree days). the season was 18 days ahead of the norm at the beginning of harvest (September 10).
Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon: 89%. Petit Verdot: 7%. Cabernet Franc: 4%

The 2013 Dominus overwhelms all the senses with its magnificent overall balance and towering intensity. Deep and nearly impenetrable in the glass. the 2013 boasts off the charts dry extract and overall power. Violets. smoke. black cherries. menthol. incense. crème de cassis and dark spices are some of the many signatures that take shape in the glass. Even better in bottle than it was in barrel. the 2013 is utterly magnificent. This is a remarkably vivid. nuanced wine considering its sheer size.

The 2013 Dominus is. to my way of thinking. one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history. both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine. with very low yields of only 3.500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon. 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. offers up notes of cedar wood. forest floor. loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color. super-pure and intense. this wine has low acidity. but ripe. noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years.

The 2014s. where the production of Napanook was only 2.200 cases and Dominus slightly more than the 2015 at 4.000 cases. was another early harvest. although somewhat later than 2015. The 2014 Dominus. which is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon. 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot really struts its stuff. Moueix’s belief in dry farming seems to be paying off with stronger and stronger vintages, each successive year, and the 2014 is a sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine with notes of red and blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, spice box and licorice. The color is a dense plum/ruby/purple, much like the Napanook. This is a beauty that is already drinking gorgeously – as most 2014s are – and will continue to evolve for 25 or so years.

Deep, pliant and exquisitely layered, the 2014 possesses tons of concentration and mid-palate depth. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2014 comes across as a hybrid of 2013 and 2012. I very much like the energy and focus in this wine. This is a fabulous wine in every way. With time in the glass, the flavors gain in brightness and focus. There is certainly much to look forward to.

From a slightly more challenging year for this estate due to the heavy springtime rains, the 2019 Dominus is a classic blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc from this team brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. It offers a more ruby/plum and borderline opaque hue as well as a great nose of ripe currants, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and a touch of loamy earth. This round, supple, medium to full-bodied effort has soft tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's not going to match the all-time greats here, but it’s a charming, endearing Cabernet that will offer incredible pleasure with just 3-5 years of bottle age and drink well for 20+ years or more.

Very fine-grained, but impressively sturdy in feel, with a long, lingering note of iron piercing the finish. For the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2040. 4,000 cases made.

This is incredible on the nose, offering hot stones, blackcurrants, iodine and wet earth. Full-bodied with a tight center palate, then it opens with a tannin structure that is weightless and spreads across the palate. Totally integrated on the palate. This is a magic-carpet wine. Really incredible. One of the reference points for the vintage. Drinkable now and please try a bottle, but it’s one for the cellar.

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Dominus slowly emerges from the glass with profound notes of blackcurrant cordial, ripe black plums, boysenberries and Black Forest cake with hints of violets, star anise, cracked black pepper, raspberry leaves and pencil lead, plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit layers, creating a beguiling sense of richness that is beautifully countered by invigorating freshness and great poise, framed by super ripe, plush tannins and beautiful tension, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note and, finally, lots of mineral sparks. For all that it is at the moment, one cannot help but feel that this 2018 is holding something back. Give it a good five years in bottle, at least, and then get set for what I suspect will be a mind-blowing transformation over the next 30 years+.

The 2018 Dominus has really shut down over the last year. I underestimated its imposing structure and density, both of which are on fully display today. The 2018 is a potent Dominus endowed with superb depth and tons of vertical explosive energy allied to a feeling of elegance that becomes increasingly apparent over time. Dark fruit, spice and a whole range of earthy, savory notes add layers of complexity. Superb.

It’s just gorgeously put together and a magical, flawless wine. It's going to take a decade to hit maturity but will evolve for 40-50 years in cold cellars. It is as good as it gets in classic, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon!

Der Othello 2015 Napa Valley ist der Einstieg in die Welt der Dominus - Weine. Er ist so etwas wie der "Le Volte" bei Ornellaia. Ein Drittwein der schon einiges von seinen grösseren Brüdern verrät und so manches gemeinsam hat. Der Othello ist noch relativ jung auf dem Internationalen Markt. der Othello wird seit dem Jahrgang 2006 produziert. ursprünglich auf dem Asiatischen Markt vermarktet. wird er nun auch bei uns viel Freude bereiten. Der 2012er Othello ist der erste Jahrgang der auch auf dem Euroäischen Markt verfügbar ist. Mit dem Kracherjahrgang 2013 erhielt er einen super Nachfolger. der allerdings etwas Zeit brauchen wird um seine Kanten zu glätten. Er geizt nicht mit seinen Reizen. Wie im Bordeaux auch verwendet Christian Moueix die klassischen Bordeauxrebsorten in dieser Blend. 86% Cabernet Sauvignon. 8% Cabernet Franc und 6% Petit Verdot. Die Trauben werden per Hand gelesen. bei behutsamen überpumpen findet die schonende Extraktion statt. Der Ausbau erfolgt dann über 14 Monate iin Französischen Fässern.

Der Cardinale ist ein Napa Valley Rotwein der zum Imperium der Jackson Familie zählt. Das besondere ist. dass das Weingut Cardinale zwar als Gebäude im Oakville District beheimatet ist. bei der Frucht für den späteren Top Wein Cardinale aber verschiedenen Weinberge genutzt werden. Die Weinberge verteilen sich in den besten Appelationen des Nap Valley: Diamond Mountain District. Mount Veeder. Stags Leap. Howell Mountain. St. Helena. Spring Mountain District. Für den Cardinale 2014 Proprietary Red Wine verwendet der begnadete Christopher Carpenter aus 11 verschiedenen Weinbergen Cabernet Sauvignon des Napa Valley welche dann 88% der finalen Blend repräsentieren. Und aus den Weinbergen des Howell Mountain Districts stammen 12% Merlot in der Blend für den Cardinale 2014. A magnificent wine made the by the brilliant winemaker Chris Carpenter. who also works for the Kendall-Jackson empire at Lakoya and a handful of other estates. this blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot is sourced from multiple vineyards owned by the Jacksons. from Veeder Peak to Spring Mountain to Howell Mountain. In 2014. it reminded me of a great vintage of Pontet-Canet from Pauillac. but slightly bigger than life. The inky purple color. the stunning nose of cedar wood. unsmoked cigar tobacco. graphite. crème de cassis and subtle new oak is followed by a multi-layered. profoundly concentrated. large-scaled wine with sensational levels of blackcurrant fruit moving toward blackberries. A wine of great intensity. silky tannins and adequate acidity. this is clearly one of the great. great wines of the vintage. and another tour de force in winemaking from Carpenter. It is a 15- to 20- year wine. but the window for drinking its is probably that big as well.

Bottled in January 2019, the 2016 Insignia is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec, aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is a little reticent to begin, needing a fair bit of coaxing to reveal beautifully beguiling notions of wild blueberries, warm blackberries, black currant cordial, cloves and cedar chest with nuances of camphor, yeast extract, charcuterie and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and depth, revealing loads of subtle floral, black fruit and earthy layers with a firm, very finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. 13,400 cases were made.

A barrel sample made up of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec to be aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a deep garnet-purple color and is a little reticent at this still nascent stage (to be bottled in January 2019), opening out to reveal chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers and compelling herbal sparks, featuring a firm, fine-grained backbone and bags of freshness lifting the finish. 13,500 cases are expected to be made.

Lovely density and intensity with dark berries, blueberries and inky undertones with hints of spice, chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a flavorful finish. The texture and length are fantastic here. Complex. Hints of smoky wood at the end. This needs three to five years more in bottle age. Exciting wine. Try after 2022.

The 2016 Insignia has turned out beautifully. Silky, layered and positively striking, the 2016 is magnificent. In this vintage. Insignia is especially silky. refined and understated, which is unusual for this wine that has often been more bombastic. Readers will have to be patient with the 2016, as it needs at least several years in bottle to be at its very best, but this is all finesse and class.

Der Inglenook Rubicon 2013 Napa Valley ist das Flagschiff der Inglenook'schen Cabernets. Im Glas, typisch Cabernet, von einem dunklen Rubin- bis Purpurrot, zeigt sich die Nase mit Aromen von Cassis, Minze, Milchschokolade, Mandel und leichten Röstnoten. Der 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon stammt aus dem hinteren Teil des Weinguts, das an den Ausläufern der Mayacamas Mountains liegt. Hier sind die Weine dicht, kraftvoll und strukturiert. Genau das zeigt sich im Jahrgang 2013. Schichten von dunklen Früchten bauen sich zu einem Crescendo von Aromen, Geschmacksnoten und Texturen auf, die mit Anklängen von Mokka, Espresso, Kies und dunklen Gewürzen durchzogen sind. Das neue Holz, das anfangs sehr dominant war, beginnt sich zu integrieren und lässt die Frucht stärker hervortreten als in der Vergangenheit. The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild screams Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose of intense black fruit, graphite and subtle minty aromas, supremely well-defined and revealing a hint of star anise with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully balanced, offering sappy black fruit, black pepper, graphite and just a touch of spice. This has more body, maybe even a touch more sinew than recent vintages, perhaps because of the reconfiguration of the Merlot parcels (see my note en primeur). Very persistent and almost uncharacteristically grippy on the finish, this is a gifted Lafite-Rothschild that will last 50+ years. It will certainly surpass the 2018 with continued bottle age.

It changes all the time in the glass, just as in the nose. Yet, it remains cool and classy. Full-bodied with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, carrying on and on and on. Well-framed and compact wine. Never-ending procession of currant, berry and black cherry fruit, together with licorice, earth and just a hint of black truffle. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Give this until 2028 to show its true greatness.

The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild is based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and it hit a relatively normal alcohol level of 13.5%, which is higher than the 2009 and shows the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vintage. It shows the new, modern style of Bordeaux in its purity, elegance, and finesse while still being an incredibly concentrated Pauillac, and where some vintages of Mouton can just about jump out of the glass, this is a more seamless, streamlined, elegant beauty that builds with time in the glass and is just about impossible to fault. Gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor, licorice, damp earth, and graphite, as well as some espresso nuances, emerge on the nose, and it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is pure haute couture in Bordeaux that unquestionably offers pleasure today (again, just about all modern Bordeaux from a great vintage offer pleasure in their youth) but will require a solid decade to hit maturity, and it should evolve for 20, 30, 40 years or more. This is not an unformed beast of wine that demands bottle age, and I suspect it will have a broad, forgiving drink window that consumers will love.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, tightly knit on the entry, and very fresh and saline, with just a very slight bitter edginess toward the almost Côte de Nuits–like finish (especially returning to my glass after 20 minutes). Quintessential Palmer, this will require 4–6 years in bottle.

The 2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is a monster of a wine with an almost Château Latour-like stature and structure, offering deep, backward, slightly reductive notes of blackcurrants, crushed stone, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf. Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon mixed with 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it's full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with masses of tannins, beautiful mid-palate density, and a great finish. As I've commented previously, the up-front, sexy style of the past (due to the larger Merlot content, I believe) has been replaced by a more regal, at times austere profile. Nevertheless, it's still its own wine and very Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in style. This 2018 is going to need 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40+ years.

Ein Jahrgang mit kleinen Beeren und dicken Schalen, daher haben sie die Mazerationszeit verkürzt, um den Schwerpunkt auf diese Reinheit des Ausdrucks zu legen. Dies ist ein sehr feiner 707. Oft etwas schwerfällig, aber dieser ist raffinierter, als ich ihn in Erinnerung habe. Tannine wie eine Gewehrmündung mit einem Hauch von stählernem Willen. Wie ein Film aus legierten Kugellagern, der über den großzügig gewichteten Gaumen rollt und dabei Jod, Kräuterstrauß, eine Spur Tapenade und Cassis an den richtigen Stellen liefert. Reich und kraftvoll, aber gleichzeitig detailliert und herzhaft. Die Saftigkeit der Frucht überwindet mühelos das Übermaß an Eichenholz und verheißt eine sehr vielversprechende Zukunft. Ein wunderbarer Wein in der Entstehung. Am besten nach 2027.
