Brought up almost all in used barrels, the 2020 Principauté D'Orange Terre de Bussiere reminds me of a solid Bordeaux (it's mostly Merlot) with its ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, and sappy, green herb-like aromatics. These carry to a medium-bodied, juicy, delicious effort that will certainly offer pleasure over the coming couple of years. 88 Punkte

There was only one 32-hectoliter foudre (now bottled) of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues, an all-Grenache cuvée vinified with 50% whole clusters. It's floral and herbal on the nose, with bold flavors of blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it boasts supple tannins balanced by hints of brine and fresh acids. It's easily the equal of many Châteauneufs and the price has crept up to reflect that.

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc. Clairette. Grenache Blanc. Roussanne and Viognier. all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel. with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean. zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Christophe wore his customary. irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match. and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest." he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power. finesse and acidity." Interestingly. the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines. which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)

Much more powerful and closed, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes more from the La Crau and La Janasse lieux-dits and is the usual blend of mostly Grenache with a touch of Syrah. Blackberries, graphite, scorched earth, pepper, and sappy garrigue all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, has beautiful concentration, polished tannins, and a great finish. Nothing is out of place, and this perfectly balanced, authoritative, powerful, and incredibly impressive 2020 will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It's never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with "a Grenache lover's dream." This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.

Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy. mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits more dark fruit than I would've expected, with black cherries, black olives and tar all mingling on the nose. In the mouth, the blend of 70% Grenache. 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lush, lingering finish. Easy to drink now, it should age for at least a decade just on its sheer concentration and ripeness.

Hints of peppery spice, vanilla and woodsmoke accent the blueberry-scented nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and concentrated, adding hints of black cherries, chocolate and licorice on the long finish. It's hard to top this sort of quality at the suggested retail of $19.

Intensive tintige Farbe. In der Nase dominieren Aromen von roten und schwarzen reifen Früchten (Kirsch und wilde Brombeeren). Der Mund ist voll, mit Aromen von schwarzer Johannisbeere Likör und Gewürzen. Die Tannine sind sowohl harmonisch als auch elegant dank der Fleischigkeit des Weins. Im Abgang zeigen sich Noten von Lakritze und Vanille, die dem Wein Länge und Komplexität verleihen.

Wie in den meisten Jahrgängen, gibt es in der Nase des 2022 Gigondas La Louisiane einen charakteristischen blumigen Duft. Er ist rosenartig und verleiht den schwarzen Kirschen und schwarzen Himbeeren, die den Kern dieser körperreichen Anstrengung bilden, eine schöne Note. Er ist seidig, reif und lang, mit einem Hauch von Lakritze im Abgang.

Der 2022 Gigondas La Louisiane liegt in derselben Liga. Hauptsächlich aus Grenache von Rebstöcken rund um das Anwesen auf der unteren Ebene, hat er ein etwas dunkleres Profil mit klassischen Noten von Pfefferkräutern, Garrigue, Erde und floralen Anklängen. Er ist mittel- bis vollmundig, mit einer mehrschichtigen, den Mund ausfüllenden Textur und einem großartigen Finish. Dieser breite, expansive und verführerische Gigondas wird von Anfang an strahlen.
