All Grenache, with about 20% to 30% whole bunches, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is slightly herbal and stemmy on the nose, but those elements are balanced by wonderful black cherry and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated yet silky, with a long, briny finish, this is another strong 2020 from the Sabon family.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It's never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with "a Grenache lover's dream." This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.

There was only one 32-hectoliter foudre (now bottled) of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues, an all-Grenache cuvée vinified with 50% whole clusters. It's floral and herbal on the nose, with bold flavors of blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it boasts supple tannins balanced by hints of brine and fresh acids. It's easily the equal of many Châteauneufs and the price has crept up to reflect that.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan. Grenache. Mourvèdre and Syrah. It's a full-bodied. silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty. earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.

Made from Grenache, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc has pretty citrus and melon fruit as well as some sappy herb-like aromas and flavors. It's pure, medium-bodied, has a vibrant sense of minerality, and a great finish.

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc. Clairette. Grenache Blanc. Roussanne and Viognier. all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel. with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean. zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Christophe wore his customary. irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match. and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest." he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power. finesse and acidity." Interestingly. the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines. which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)

Much more powerful and closed, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes more from the La Crau and La Janasse lieux-dits and is the usual blend of mostly Grenache with a touch of Syrah. Blackberries, graphite, scorched earth, pepper, and sappy garrigue all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, has beautiful concentration, polished tannins, and a great finish. Nothing is out of place, and this perfectly balanced, authoritative, powerful, and incredibly impressive 2020 will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy. mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.

Anbau:
Die Reben werden ohne Pestizide oder Insektizide angebaut und der Dünger ist natürlich. Das Land wird ohne Unkrautvernichtungsmittel bearbeitet, um die Belüftung und Flexibilität des Bodens zu erhalten. Massenselektion aus dem berühmten Terroir von Condrieux.

Ausbau:
Morgendliche Handlese in Kisten mit Sortierung im Weinberg. Pneumatisches Pressen, dann Weinbereitung in Fässern.

Reifung:
Auf Sedimenten, 60 % in Tanks und 40 % in Fässern (einschließlich 1/4 neues Holz) unter Aufrühren, für 6 Monate.

Der Jahrgang 2019 ist ein ganz besonderer für das Weingut. Und das in mehrfacher Hinsicht.

Auch wenn man hier bereits seit 2004 komplett biologisch arbeitet, hat man auf Chateau Pibarnon erst 2016 mit der Zertifizierung begonnen, um sie 2019 zu erhalten. So lässt sich das Terroir der Weinberge ausspielen, so kann die Höhenlage der Parzellen mit ihren kühlen Nächten für eine langsame Traubenreife bestens genutzt werden. So kann sich der hohe Kalkgehalt der alten Triasböden sensorisch ausdrücken in Weinen mit großer Frische und Mineralität sowie feinen und eleganten Tanninen.

2019 ist aber auch ein Jahrgang, der auf Chateau de Pibarnon wegen des Wetters in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Es regnete. Und das reichlich. Allerdings nur von Oktober bis Januar. 550 mm. So war die Versorgung und der Gesundheitszustand der Trauben während der Vegetationsperiode perfekt.

Schließlich markiert 2019 eine Rückkehr zu den eigenen Wurzeln. In diesem Jahr, so erklärt Weingutsleiter Eric de Saint Victor, "haben wir unsere Rotweine großteils mit ganzen Trauben vinifiziert um keine zu starken Tannine zu erhalten. Unsere Weine orientieren sich an der Finesse, wie Sie wissen. Der Vorteil der Traubenstiele besteht darin, dass sie Mineralität und Frische verleihen, die ein Jahrgang wie dieser hätte überdecken können. Der Stiel ermöglicht einen direkten Kontakt mit dem Kalkstein, was zu strukturierten und vollmundigen, aber nicht muskulösen Weinen mit einem zarten und geschmeidigen Mundgefühl führt."

Und weiter: "Der 2019er Rotwein ist ein leuchtender, erobernder, schmackhafter und paradoxerweise trotz seiner Kraft sehr delikater Wein. Seine saftigen, ausgewogenen Tannine sind schlicht und präzise, ohne jegliche Exzesse. Einer der besten Stoffe, die wir seit langem produziert haben. Sehr große Präzision mit genau dem richtigen Maß an Frechheit."

Und für den 2017er Jahrgang gab es von Jeb Dunnuck sogar 95 Punkte in seinen Top 100 of 2021. Mit seinen Aromen reifer Kirschen und Brombeeren, Kräuter der Provence und Pfeffer schreie der Bandol rouge 2017 von Pibarnon geradezu seine Provenienz heraus. Reichhaltig und konzentriert, vollmundig und rein. Dazu wunderbare Tannine und ein toller Abgang.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits more dark fruit than I would've expected, with black cherries, black olives and tar all mingling on the nose. In the mouth, the blend of 70% Grenache. 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lush, lingering finish. Easy to drink now, it should age for at least a decade just on its sheer concentration and ripeness.
