Chateau Trottevielle

Das Chateau Trottevielle ist ein sehr altes Weingut. Sein Name entstammt der Legende einer alten Dame, die vor mehreren Hundert Jahren hier lebte. An der Kreuzung zweier Straßen vor ihrem Haus befand sich die eine Posthaltestelle, zu der die alte Frau - la vielle- "trottete", wenn eine Kutsche vorbei kam. So entstand der Name "Trotte Vielle".
Da heutige Chateau ist von einem Park und Weinreben umgeben. Die Weinberge überblicken nach Süden hin das Tal und profitieren so von einer extrem guten Sonneneinstrahlung. Das Terroir besteht aus einer 30 cm dünnen Tonschicht auf einem kalksockel. In den ehemaligen Steinbrüchen unter den Weinbergen sind Wurzeln von Reben sichtbar, die nach Nahrung suchen. Trottevielle besitzt auch eine Parzelle mit ca. 120 Jahre alten Rebstöcken aus der Zeit vor der Reblauskrise.
Die Weine von Trottevielle sind für ihre Eleganz, ihre Rondeur und ihre Länge bekannt. Eigenschafte, die von dem hohen Anteil Cabernet franc in der Assemblage herrühren. Dank ihrer jugendlcihen fruchtigkeit und Fülle nach einigen Jahren Reife sind sie bei Weinliebhabern in der ganzen Welt begehrt.

My rough note on the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille included more than one expletive, and this beauty is straight-up gorgeous. Vivid blue fruits, violets, flowers, and chocolate all make an appearance on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered texture, perfect tannins, and nicely integrated oak. Based on 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it remains to be seen if this will ultimately match the magical 2020, but we're not far off. This is a château readers need to have on their radar.

A striking and seriously impressive Trotte Vieille in 2022. Serious and strong aromatically, fully expressive with dark ripe bramble fruits, softly fragrant with gentle perfumed nuances. Bright and alive in the glass, has some tension, a sense of linearity and focus, with not much expansiveness at this point but the tannin detail and definition is exceptional with a soft creamy, chalky, powdery and firm texture. So refined, feels almost light in the mouth but there’s concentration and power underneath with mouthwatering acidity keeping the sense of life. Extremely well constructed with poise and a sense of definition to the overall frame. Very precise and totally moreish in a brooding way. A very complete wine with so much to like. 100% new oak. 60% grand vin. 30hl/ha. 3.70pH. First vintage fully operating in the new gravity fed cellar.

Improvements are underway in the vineyards, but for now, the élevage would appear to be this estate's weak link.

98 The 2020 Château Trotte Vieille has closed down since I tasted it as a barrel sample in 2021 and needs lots of air, but this is an incredibly gorgeous wine. Its dense purple hue is followed by powerful, inward bouquet of ripe, incredibly pure black and blue fruits, smoky oak, tons of minerality, and a kiss of violets that takes lots of air to shine. The palate is similar in style, with a concentrated, focused, almost austere edge that carries beautiful tannins, awesome extract, flawless overall balance, and a great finish. While it's unquestionably a brilliant wine, it's not for those looking for instant gratification and is much more reserved than the 2019 at this stage. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it should have 25 to 30 years of overall longevity.

Fantastic texture and structure to this wine with firm, silky tannins that go on and on. Love the crushed blackberries, blueberries and salt. Floral and mineral character, too. Full and tight with great length. Chewy at the very end, indicating real structure. All about structure and length. 50% cabernet franc, 49% merlot, and 1% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2020 TrotteVieille is quite broody and backward on the nose at first, demanding 15–20 minutes to open. It then reveals blackberry, sea spray/marine scents and hints of crushed chalk and pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm structure, indicating that this is a Saint-Émilion that should be cellared for several years. There is a lovely touch of white pepper and allspice toward the finish. I suspect this is a TrotteVieille that will reward the patient.

Wow, das ist wirklich etwas Besonderes. Er ist voll und kraftvoll mit einer wirklich beeindruckenden Tiefe der Frucht. Dennoch bleibt er agil und strukturiert, mit angespannten Muskeln, die durch ein Gefühl von Leichtigkeit ausgeglichen werden. Gut definiert und ausbalanciert. 53% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot und 3% Cabernet. Wird er besser sein als 2022?

96-98 Punkte Der 2023 Trotte Vieille ist tief granatviolett in der Farbe. Der erste Eindruck ist WOW! Er tänzelt aus dem Glas mit auffälligen Noten von reifen schwarzen Pflaumen, Maulbeeren und Brombeerkuchen, gefolgt von Anklängen an kandierte Veilchen, Zedernholz, Zimtstange und Nelkenöl. Der mittel- bis vollmundige Gaumen liefert eine elektrische Spannung, mit superfinen, samtig-glatten Tanninen und intensiven Schichten von schwarzen Früchten und Gewürzen, die lange und duftend enden. Zusammen mit dem Jahrgang 2022 ist dies der beste Trotte Vieille, den ich je probiert habe. Die Mischung besteht aus 53% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot und 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, mit einem Alkoholgehalt von 13,5%. „Der neue Gärkeller wurde 2021 für Trotte Vieille fertiggestellt,“ kommentierte Besitzer Frédéric Castéja. „Dies machte einen großen Unterschied in dem, was wir dieses Jahr erreichen konnten. Das Ziel war, die Frucht zu respektieren, die Frische zu bewahren und Weine zu machen, die in jungen Jahren nicht zu tanninhaltig und aggressiv sind. Dies ist das Gegenteil der Weine aus den 1990er Jahren.

Tiefdunkles Rubinrot, undurchsichtiger Kern, violette Reflexe, zarter Randaufhellung. Frisches und präzises Aroma, blumig, Cassis, Brombeere, Pfeffer, Preiselbeere. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich sehr dicht und vollmundig, gleichzeitig kraftvoll und mit feinen Tanninen, cremiger Basis, sehr guter Abgang. Saftig, mit ausgeprägter Mineralität, hohem Maß an Dynamik und einem gewissen Alterungspotential.

Der 2023 Trotte Vieille ist ein wirklich beeindruckender Wein. Dunkel, resonant und explosiv, entfaltet der Jahrgang 2023 eine enorme Wucht. Ein Ausbruch von dunklen Früchten, Kräutern, Menthol, Gewürzen und Lakritz sättigt den Gaumen, begleitet von schönen floralen und herzhaften Noten, die die gesamte Fülle wunderbar ergänzen. Hervorragend.

94-96 Punkte Pflaumenlikör, Blumen, Lakritz und schwarze Kirschen, mit Noten von dunkler Schokolade eröffnen das Bouquet. Am Gaumen ist der Wein üppig, opulent, reif und tief. Die Früchte sind leuchtend, frisch und drücken vor allem einen Hauch von Mineralität mit salzigen Rändern aus. Es gibt Frische sowie Reinheit, Länge und cremige Tannine im Abgang. Die Ernte fand vom 8. September bis 4. Oktober statt. Die verlängerte Ernte ist auf einen Parzelle-für-Parzelle-Auswahlprozess zurückzuführen, bei dem auf die phenolische Reife jeder Parzelle gewartet wurde. Trinkbar von 2028 bis 2055.

The 2019 needs time, but it is a hugely promising wine. It is also one of the most tannic wines in Saint-Émilion.

Almost Left Bank in style, this shows great clarity and fans out wonderfully on the finish. Superb.
