In the running for the most opulent, sensationally textured, massive wine in the vintage is the 2015 L'Evangile and if tasting this beauty doesn’t make your heart rate increase, I don’t know what will. Made from 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc brought up in plenty of new oak, its ruby/plum color is followed by an awesome bouquet of blackberry jam, smoked meats, licorice, truffle, and hints of chocolate. Thick, opulent, super ripe, and decadent, with a full-bodied mouthfeel that needs to be tasted to be believed, it still stays balanced and fresh on the palate and is already impossible to resist. It’s going to keep for 3+ decades. This is one of those wines I wish every reader could taste!

The 2015 L'Evangile is composed of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 18 months in new oak barrels from Tonnellerie des Domaines (their own cooperage). Deep garnet-purple in color. it absolutely leaps from the glass with complex. gregarious notes of blackberry pie. plum preserves. smoked meats/charcuterie. mocha and licorice plus suggestions of cloves. black soil and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied. rich. opulent and jaw-droppingly sexy. it has beautifully plush yet firm tannins with a lively backbone and a very long. spicy finish.

The 2015 L'Evangile is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc picked between September 15 and October 5. and September 29 to October 5 respectively. Matured almost in 100% new oak. it has a very pure and charming bouquet. the Merlot dominant and slightly shrouding the Cabernet Franc at the moment. It is worth staying with this Pomerol. because it does change after four to five minutes in the glass. revealing touches of truffle and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. well-judged acidity. understated on the entry but gaining momentum in the glass. retaining a wonderful sense of symmetry and finishing with precision and class. This could well be the pick of the wines from the Domaines Barons Rothschild stable in 2015 and kudos to winemaker Jean-Pascal Vazart.

84 % Merlot. 16 % Cabernet Franc. Tiefes Purpur. satt in der Mitte. Granatschimmer am Rand. Wohliges. dunkelmalziges Bouquet. viel Brombeeren und dunkle Schokolade. Im Gaumen sehr füllig mit einer selten angetroffenen Opulenz bei einer Evangile-Fassprobe. alles ist harmonisch und am richtigen Ort. Da ist viel Pomerol-Erotik mit dabei. Für den Kellermeister Pascal Vazart kann man diesen phänomenalen durchaus mit dem 1998er vergleichen.

The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous. spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

Another heavenly Pomerol in the vintage, the 2018 Château Trotanoy checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in (I suspect) lots of new French oak (although it's certainly not apparent). Revealing a dense purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like bouquet of blackcurrants, dried flowers, cured meats, violets, tobacco, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a sexy, seductive texture, building yet sweet tannins, and just a rich, concentrated, yet flawless profile on the palate that's already impossible to resist. Nevertheless, a good 7-8 years of bottle age are warranted, and this magical elixir is going to evolve for 40 years or more.

The 2018 Trotanoy is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a jaw-dropping perfume of Black Forest cake, black raspberries, blackberry pie and kirsch, followed by hints of cast-iron pan, violets, woodsmoke, Chinese five spice and eucalyptus, with a waft of tree bark. The full-bodied palate explodes with exotic spice and mineral fireworks, grounded by a concentrated, black and red berry preserves core and framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. From bottle. Le Gay is more a wine of subtlety and vibrancy than pure power. As good as it is. my impression today is that the fruit is a bit dried out. I liked the 2016 more from barrel.

The 2016 La Conseillante is a brilliant wine from the team led by Technical Director Marielle Cazaux. Polished and sophisticated. the 2016 possesses stunning vertical lift. with soaring aromatics that make a strong first impression. Silky and seductive on the palate. the 2016 is all about precision and energy in the early going. It is also one of the most quite. soft-spoken Pomerols of the vintage. Hints of blackberry. lavender. licorice and spice add nuance. but in 2016 La Conseillante stands out for its sublime balance and total sense of harmony. The 2016 spent 17 months in oak. 70% new. As gorgeous as the 2016 is. my impression is that the best is yet to come. Since arriving at La Conseillante. Cazaux has changed much in the farming of the property. including introducing cover crops and limiting yields. She also now works with no sulfites in winemaking and opts for lower temperatures in fermentation. In other words. the full results of all of that work is yet to be seen. For now. though. the 2016 Conseillante is a pretty special wine. Don't miss it. Tasted two times.

The aromas of violets and dark berries with licorice and sweet black tea are so attractive. What really impresses is the sweet fruit in the dense middle palate. So attractive. At the same time. there’s plenty of plush and ripe tannins that give the wine form and brightness. And it still remains bright on the finish. as the tannins roll on. A great Conseillante. Try after 2024.

It is aging in 70% new and 30% second year barrels, where it will stay for an estimated 16 months. The wine has 14.9% alcohol and is blended of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Deep purple-black colored, the 2018 Feytit Clinet is a little shy to begin, unfurling to reveal wild blueberries, warm plums and black cherries with hints of violets, iron ore. pencil shavings and damp soil. Proprietor Jeremy Chasseuil turned out another gorgeous wine at Feytit-Clinet. Although the 2018 does not have the explosive energy of some past vintages. in exchange it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Cedar, tobacco, gravel, dried flowers, mint, spice and incense build as this richly textured, layered Pomerol shows off its class. As always, Feytit-Clinet is one of the most virile, potent wines of Pomerol and all of Bordeaux, for that matter. The blend is 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.

You could sit and nose this all day. The balanced palate is medium-bodied and grippy in the mouth. displaying supple tannin and a perfect line of acidity. Again. there is a symmetry about this Pomerol that is utterly beguiling. and the persistence is up there with the very best. Simply put. this is one of the best L’Eglise-Clinet wines I have tasted in recent years. Stunning.

Full-bodied. super refined and structured with perfectly manicured tannins and a very. very long finish. It’s full of soul and precision. Take a look after 2024.
