Always a notable value, this age-worthy cuvée has turned out very well this year.

From the up-and-coming Castillon region, just east of Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château D'Aiguilhe has a floral, cassis, and black raspberry-driven style that shows more tobacco and classic limestone minerality with time in the glass. It's medium to full-bodied, has fine tannins, and the balance and class to evolve for 10-15 years. It's a seriously good Castillon, even better than the brilliant 2019.

The 2020 Château d’Aiguilhe has a nose laden with mulberry, blackberry, allspice and even rooibos scents that lends it a subtle Capelands slant, not necessarily in a bad way. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry, offering crunchy black fruit struck through with a silver bead of acidity. Fresh and vibrant, leaving blackberry, tobacco and touches of sour cherry on the aftertaste. There is real joie-de-vivre here.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Mit feiner Kräuterwürze unterlegte rote Kirschenfrucht, kandierte Veilchen, schwarze Beeren im Hintergrund. Saftig, Nuancen von Brombeeren und Pflaumen, frisch strukturiert, mineralisch-zitronig im Abgang, ein lebendiger Speisenbegleiter.

The 2020 Joanin Bécot was affected by a hailstorm in May which resulted in some Cabernet Franc being parsed out from the blend, so this year there is half the normal production. It has quite a dense and quite earthy nose, introverted black fruit mixed with potpourri and traces of orange zest, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with dry, gritty tannins with a smudge of dark chocolate towards the sandy finish. It needs a little more flesh around the bones, but that should come during its barrel maturation.

The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins and good acidity, though it needs a little more cohesion toward the finish. Hopefully it will gain harmony and flesh during its barrel maturation, because it does offer a pleasant salinity.
