The 2015 Calon Ségur is a very pretty. if somewhat one-dimensional wine with good brightness in its floral-infused red berry fruit. The purity aromas and flavors is striking. but the texture. dimension and complexity of the very best years is elusive. The 2015 is an attractive. mid-weight Calon Ségur to drink while some of the more recent vintages. especially the 2014 and 2016. are left to age in the cellar. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon. 16% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot.

82 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 16 % Merlot. 2 % Petit Verdot. Eine frühe Ernte. Sattes Purpur-Granat. dicht in der Mitte. lila Schimmer aussen. Schlank wirkendes. floral-frisches Bouquet. dunkler Beerenton. Rosenblätter. vielschichtig mit mittlerem Druck im Ansatz. Im Gaumen ein Finessenpaket sondergleichen. hoch feine Tannine. integrierte Säure und eine ganz feine Stofftextur über der Zunge zeigend. Vielleicht unterschätzt man diesen Wein gerade aus diesem Grund. Er wirkt irgendwie lautlos in seiner bescheidenen Art. Aber in 20 Jahren wird er seine Ketzer strafen. Ein önologisches Violinkonzert! Auf alle Fälle merkt man seinen Ausbau in 100 % neuen Barriquen gar nicht.

Composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon. 16% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. the 2015 Calon-Segur was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 20 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of warm blackberries. cassis. black cherries and licorice with touches of roses and dark chocolate. The medium-bodied palate is firm and chewy with good concentration and a spicy finish.

Easily the greatest example from this château that I've tasted, the 2018 Château Calon Ségur checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot aged 20 months in new French oak. This dense purple-hued beauty boasts a stunning nose of blackcurrants, crème de cassis, tobacco, baking spices, chocolate, and cedarwood. With full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, gorgeous tannins, and one seriously long finish, it hits that palate with 15% alcohol, yet you wouldn't know it by tasting it, and the wine is perfectly balanced, has incredible purity of fruit, and stays fresh and lively, with a clean finish. This magical Saint-Estèphe can be drunk any time over the coming 20+ years.

Integrated and harmonious, this pure, concentrated and dynamic wine is one of the finest vintages that Vincent Millet and his team have produced to date.

The 2020 Château Calon Ségur is pure gold and another masterpiece from this estate. Harvested all in September and pulled from their 48 hectares of vines, the blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot that spent 20 months all in new French oak, and it hit 13.2% natural alcohol. My notes started and ended with "wow," and this riveting Saint-Estèphe offers a heavenly bouquet of red and black currants, truffly earth, iron, espresso, and tobacco leaf. With incredible purity of fruit, full-bodied richness, and ultra-fine tannins, it's a deep, pure, layered 2020 that deserves at least 7-8 years of bottle age and will cruise for 40-50 years in cold cellars. The 2019 Calon Ségur is a wine of soaring vertical intensity and pure power. That's the good news. The not so good news is that it won't be ready to drink any time soon. Exotic spice, pencil shavings, crème de cassis, mocha and licorice are some of the nuances that develop in the glass, but those descriptions can't even begin to capture the sheer beauty of what is in the glass. I loved the 2019 from barrel and I love it just as much from bottle.

The 2019 Calon-Ségur, bottled in July 2021, has an alluring, very floral bouquet, the earlier crushed violet scents seemingly accentuated during the élevage. This is a superb wine from Vincent Millet and his team.

The 2016 Calon Ségur is dense and radiant on the palate. just as it was from barrel. Even with all of its intensity. the 2016 is distinguished by its sense of freshness. lift and nuance. much of which comes from the 18% Cabernet Franc in the blend. Sweet floral. spice and minty notes add aromatic intensity to a core of sweet red cherry and plum fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure. but the tannins are sweet. silky and perfectly ripe. In short. the 2016 Calon Ségur is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Technical Director Vincent Millet and his team did a tremendous job with the 2016. Tasted three times.

The 2016 Calon Ségur was matured entirely in new oak for 20 months and bottled at the end of July 2018. This was one of the most impressive wines from the estate when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle. it has a gorgeous bouquet of beautifully defined blackberry. bilberry. dark chocolate and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. perhaps suppler than Cos d’Estournel and more velvety in terms of texture. A dash of cracked black pepper and allspice appears toward the finish. which fans out gloriously. A brilliant wine from François Millet and his team.
