The Casanova di Neri house style implies a modern and sophisticated approach for sure. But the inner spirit and texture of Sangiovese is so fine and polished in its natural state that it hardly matters. The personality of the grape shines through with a loud and confident voice..

The muscularity of the structure is what gives this wine focus and intensity. So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness. Drink in 2022.

The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva holds tight to its unique character and power. The classic 2016 vintage produced generous wines that are layered and rich but also coiled tightly at their core. This wine exemplifies this point, adding lots of tart Sangiovese fruit and freshness along the way. It also shows an impressive richness of flavors with dried cherry, licorice, pressed violets, balsam herb and dusty limestone. The caveat with this wine, should you decide to drink it early, is that it needs extra time to open (and a double decanting would also help). This 10,000 bottle production opens beautifully in time.

There’s beautiful purity in this Brunello with cherry and floral aromas, as well as hints of lavender and rosemary flowers. It’s full-bodied with linear tannins that provide form and focus. It’s extremely long and beautiful, yet needs three to four years to show all the goodness it has. Try after 2024 and onwards.

The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is an especially graceful wine with tart fruit, clean mineral lines and a mid-weight approach. Like other wines from this vintage, the 2018s are more accessible than, say, the 2016s or the 2013s. You can drink the wine soon or choose to cellar it a bit longer. The young tannins are nearly fully approachable, and the wine ends with dryness and ample freshness. This is a generous production of 120,000 bottles.

Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli

Der Weinberg "Montosoli" mit seinen 5Ha Rebfläche liegt auf 320 Höhenmetern nordöstlich von Montalcino. Die Reben wurden hierbei zum ersten Mal seit 1975 seperat ausgebaut und vinifiziert. Das Miokroklima, insbesondere die Schieferböden, erzeugen einen herausragenden und vielschichtigen Wein. Sehr dunkles Rot im Glas, in der Nase direkt dunkle Kirschen, Vanille und roter Pfeffer. Am Gaumen überzeugt der Montosoli, der dank dieses Weines zu den aussagekräftigsten und höchst bewerteten Einzellagen Italiens zählt, mit reifer Frucht und endlos langem Finish.

The word "Vigna" has been added to the official name of this wine to underline work in the appellation meant to focus on single-vineyard designates. The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli comes from a unique growing site with some of the best exposures from hillside vineyards. This wine shows a slightly dark hue with added concentration and depth. I am delighted by the bouquet that reveals dark cherry, blue flower, crushed stone and grilled herb. There is sweet toast and spice at the back. This is one of the more complete and age-worthy wines from the 2018 vintage. However, my biggest hesitation is the very high 15% alcohol content of this 13,000-bottle release.
