Dieser Wein ist intensiv und vielschichtig, mit reifen dunklen Beeren, Zedernholz, Kochgewürzen und einem Hauch von Lakritze und nassen Steinen. Er ist vollmundig, breit und strukturiert, mit beeindruckender Tiefe und Fruchtkonzentration. Die Tannine sind reif und gut integriert und ziehen sich über die gesamte Länge des Weins, was zu einem strukturierten, fest gewundenen Abgang führt. Lang und anhaltend.

Eine kurze Einschätzung zu dem Chateau Cantin 2022:

Leider habe ich dieses Chateau nicht bei den Primeur Proben verkosten können, aber ich möchte gerne auf die besondere Gelegenheit hinweisen, in Zeiten von spürbar steigenden Preisen ist es anscheinend trotzdem möglich einen sehr guten Einkauf zu machen. Aus der Region Saint Christophe des Bardes aus der so viele Super Weine in den letzten Jahren hervorkamen liegt auch eben dieses Weingut Cantin. Wenn man also zwischen den Weingütern Chateau Tour Saint Christophe, Chateau Laroque (93-94 Punkte Suckling) und Chateau Mangot (94-95 Punkte Suckling) eine Linie ziehen würde könnte man von Mangot aus über Chateau Cantin wieder zurück nach Tour Saint Christophe (95-96 Punkte Suckling) einen Bereich eingrenzen und man würde schnell feststellen, das es ganz logisch ist, dass auch das Chateau Cantin ein wunderbares Terroir besitzt und einfach teil des Epizentrums für smart Buys in Saint Emilion ist. Was macht Chateau Cantin 2022 so reizvoll? Nachdem das Chateau Mangot, Tour Saint Christophe sowie Chateau Laroque die Preise um gute 20 Prozent angehoben haben ist bei Cantin ein Preis unter 20€ en Primeur noch immer möglich, einfach sagenhaft günstig für so eine tolle Bewertung bei James Suckling. Sie haben recht, die Verkostungsnotizen von eben diesem James Suckling könnten etwas ausführlicher sein, aber er liegt oft in seiner vergleichenden Einschätzung gar nicht so verkehrt, beherzigt man dies nun, ist eigentlich Kaufalarm ausgelöst. Ich jedenfalls bin froh diese Entdeckung für Sie gemacht zu haben, gerne geschehen

Bitte kaufen Sie sehr selektiv 2021, aber lassen Sie Laroque nicht aus!

Dunkle reife Frucht, etwas sogar ins schwarzbeerige gehende. Ein paar vegetabile Noten zeigen sich, an rote Beete erinnernd, aber auch weisser Pfeffer, Cassis und ein touch Kaffee. Im Mund saftig und fleischig, gute Struktur, die Säure trägt ihn und verleiht aromatischen Lift. Gut gelungen und eine neue Facette, sehr spannendes Ergebnis. 92-94 Punkte

Der Laroque 2021 öffnet sich im Glas mit Aromen von dunklen, minzigen Beeren, Orangenschale und gerösteter Eiche. Am Gaumen präsentiert er sich mittel- bis vollmundig, fleischig und vielschichtig, mit einem süßen Fruchtkern, geschmeidigen Tanninen und einem langen, mineralischen Abgang. Dieser Wein hat sich in der Flasche sehr schön entwickelt, und aufgrund seines niedrigen pH-Profils wird er wahrscheinlich von etwas Flaschenreife profitieren. 92+ Punkte.

Pichon Baron is one of the more accessible wines in its peer group today. Plum. mocha. leather. spice and chocolate all build effortlessly. As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants. black plum preserves. truffles. tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied. firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits. it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron electrifies the olfactory sense with a stunning bouquet of intense blackberry. cedar and graphite aromas that are quintessential Pauillac. Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.

Composed of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc and aged for 18 months in 70% new French barriques. the 2016 Canon is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. and—WOW—it opens with the most stunning perfume of violets. red roses and kirsch. giving way to a core of black cherry preserves. chocolate box. licorice. warm plums and Chinese five spice plus an earthy waft of underbrush. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is completely filled with expressive. perfumed black berry layers accented by lively red fruits and exotic spices. supported by impressively fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension. finishing very long with jaw-dropping energy. Tasted three times. I had one opportunity to taste the 2015 and 2016 Canon side by side. While I love the bold. rich. seductive nature of the 2015. this 2016 kicks it up a notch in terms of polish. precision. depth and persistence. Most notably. the superbly ripe. exquisitely fine-grained tannins on this 2016 bring to the table a whole other level of sophistication. Bravo!

The 2016 Canon has the unenviable task of following the astonishing 2015. and it does a damn good job. even if it doesn’t reach the same ethereal heights. There is a pleasing strictness and poise on the nose; this is less immediate than the 2015. yet intellectual. a Canon that expresses its terroir rather than tons of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. a fine bead of acidity. a smooth texture and a slightly savory but persistent finish. which feels a little plusher than the 2015. implying that this might drink a little earlier. But there is unquestionably immense breeding locked into this rejuvenated Saint-Émilion. which is now firmly ensconced among the top-flight Right Banks.

The nose opens with beautiful floral notes of violets and lavender accented with earthy notions and sparks of crushed rocks over a core of kirsch. cassis and wild blueberries. Full-bodied. rich and seductive. it has layer upon layer of red. black and blue fruits intermingled with earth and mineral hints leading to a very long. perfumed finish.

Black cherry. smoke. tobacco. cedar. gravel and incense add to the wine's decidedly somber personality.

The 2016 Haut-Bailly was mightily impressive when tasted from barrel. Now. matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April 2018 (they prefer to bottle before spring here). it has a very well defined bouquet of black fruit. graphite. crushed stone and light rose petal aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. This Haut-Bailly feels pure and classic in style. offering well-judged acidity and a sophisticated. quite tensile finish that lingers long in the mouth. I suspect this might close down in a year or two and deserves perhaps 8 to 10 years in bottle to show what it can really do. The best Haut-Bailly in the modern era? For certain.

Blended of 60% Merlot. 36% Cabernet Sauvignon. 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. the 2016 Pape Clement has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a serious. earthy nose with truffles. tilled soil. underbrush and smoked meats over a cassis. baked plums and redcurrants core plus a touch of lavender. Medium to full-bodied. firm and grainy. the palate is built like a brick house. supporting muscular black fruit and earthy notions and finishing very long and mineral laced.

The 2016 Pape Clément is fabulous. Racy and sumptuous in the glass. the 2016 captures the style that now characterizes Bernard Magrez's wines from his estate in Pessac. Specifically. the 2016 is wonderfully deep in the glass. and yet retains terrific freshness as well. A rush of dark cherry. plum. smoke. scorched earth. grilled herb. leather and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its compelling. inviting personality. I would prefer to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle to allow its full breadth of aromatics to develop. Even so. there is so much to like. Pliant. supple and super-expressive. Pape Clément is gorgeous in 2016. Tasted two times.

Stunning concentration of perfectly ripe blackcurrants here with a delicate whiff of vanilla oak and extremely fine tannins that are almost perfectly integrated on the seductive and delicate palate. right through the almost literally breathtaking. super-long and very polished finish. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Pape Clément bursts out of the glass. offering ripe blackberry. raspberry coulis. fresh mint and hints of licorice on the well-defined nose. It is perhaps a little more opulent than its peers. but unlike in the past. I don’t find it excessive. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin. There is a killer line of acidity and real panache toward a velvety. almost Pauillac-like finish armed with shimmering black fruit laced with graphite.

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich. ample and dramatic in bearing. the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften. but there is so much to look forward to. Graphite. menthol. lavender and licorice complement the inky blue/purplish fruit beautifully. The bottled wine has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than the en primeur sample. I tasted the 2016 three times. It's least favorable showing was at the château. For readers and proprietors who think wines always taste better on site...they don't.

Terrific intensity of dark berries. almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated. spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long. linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish. A blend of 86 per cent cabernet and 14 per cent merlot. Try from 2024.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Léoville Poyferré hits the ground running with intense cassis. violets. dark chocolate. menthol and fragrant earth notions complemented by nuances of cigar box and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is charged with energetic. super intense black fruit and floral layers. beautifully supported with super firm. ripe. grainy tannins and seamless freshness. This liquid is simply alive in the mouth. culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!

Chateau Troplong Mondot 2020 Saint Emilion

The 2020 Troplong Mondot may prove to be even better than the brilliant 2019, and it is one of the Right Bank's finest wines in this vintage. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of mulberries, blackberries and red cherries mingled with hints of rose petal, licorice and exotic spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a satiny attack that segues into a vibrant, polished mid-palate, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Having seen only 65% new oak and with malolactic fermentation completed in tank rather than in barrel, it's remarkably pure and seamless. With the 2020 vintage, this estate's stylistic redemption appears to be complete.

A clear step up over the 2019, the 2020 Château Troplong Mondot is mostly Merlot yet includes 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, all of which was raised in 65% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. The level of purity and finesse here is remarkable, and it reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, gunpowder, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has building, perfectly ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Certainly light years away from the riper, more opulent style of the 2000's, the wines today under consultant Thomas Duclos are much more about finesse and elegance. While I certainly miss the sexy, riper style of the past, there is no denying the incredible quality from this château today.

Er beschreibt den Wein so wie man ihn kenn, viel dunkle Frucht, Power und Struktur, doch er weist ganz klar darauf hin, das der gravierende Unterschied zu den bisherigen Jahrgängen darin liegt, dass der Wein in 2020 eine vibrierende Säurestruktur besitzt und Tonnen an Mineralität mitbringt. Er gibt seinen Lesern noch mit auf den Weg, dass der Wein einige Zeit der Reife benötigt.
