Lastly, the 2020 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is another legendary wine from this château that has been on an incredible run over the past decade. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that was brought up all in new French oak, it has a saturated purple hue to go with an incredible, mineral-laced bouquet of crème de cassis, liquid violets, graphite, and tobacco leaf. More structured and concentrated than any of the Léovilles, this blockbuster, deep, concentrated, full-bodied Saint-Julien has off-the-charts purity, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. I wrote in my notes, "Like the 2010, only better." You won't find a more concentrated yet flawlessly balanced and elegant wine out there. It's going to need a decade of cellaring and will have 40, 50, if not 60 years of longevity.

A superb wine, the 2020 Léoville Barton exhibits generous aromas of blackberries and crème de cassis mingled with hints of licorice, pencil shavings and classy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a concentrated core of fruit, sweet tannins and a nicely defined finish, it bears some similarities with the estate's demonstrative 2000 vintage, even if the two growing seasons were quite different. I suspect it will tighten up with more time in bottle, hence the plus sign next to my score, but right now, the 2020 is unusually accessible out of the gates.

It exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful bouquet of red and black cherries, currants, leafy tobacco, and cedar pencil, with a touch of damp earth that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has plenty of mid-palate depth and richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This plush, up-front, expansive, wonderfully textured Saint-Julien will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. It's the finest example from this château I've tasted. The vintage doesn't get any sexier, and this has sweet tannins, an opulent mouthfeel, and riveting purity and finesse. The 2020 Léoville Las Cases is a classic in the making, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis, loamy soil, violets and dark chocolate framed by a discreet touch of new oak. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's rich and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's built for the cellar.

One of the greatest and most consistent estates of the Médoc, Léoville Las Cases is in terrific form today. The core of the estate is the 50-hectare "Clos," surrounded by walls and bordering the Gironde to the immediate south of its neighbor, Latour. In the vineyards, where Cabernet Sauvignon rules, the team are experimenting with cover crops and biodynamic methods, and in the cellars and chai, winemaking remains very traditional. Playing in the concentrated yet focused and structured style of the vintage, it's going to need a decade to hit the early phases of its prime drinking window and will have 50-75 years of longevity.

The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energy and expressiveness, delivering red and black berry layers with loads of spicy sparks, framed by plush tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

The 2018 d'Armailhac is bright, fresh and so inviting, just as it was en primeur. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, tobacco and anise add lovely aromatic complexity. All of the intensity of the year comes through nicely and yet the personality of Armailhac is evident also. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. There is a bit more breadth and richness that is the result of yields that were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the more typical 42 or so. It was a vintage marked by heat stress, small berries and lower juice to skin ratio, as well as some parcels affected by mildew.

The 2019 Clerc Milon is a real success. At more than 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the property's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. Offering up aromas of violets, wild berries, licorice, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with notable depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. From clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravels that characterize d'Armailhac, this is by some margin the more structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two Pauillac stablemates.

As I stated in my review from barrel, the 2019 Clerc Milon contains a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (72%), from massal selection parcels that are reaching maturity. This has a very intense bouquet, perhaps now leaning more toward black than red fruit; iodine, blood orange and graphite scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vivacious, with fine-boned tannins, good focus and a silky-smooth texture toward the graphite-tinged finish. There is more elegance here than I noticed last year. This should evolve into a top-grade Clerc-Milon.

While this is a little reserved out of the gates, its energy and classical proportions will richly reward bottle age.

The 2019 impresses with its density and pure power, which makes it perhaps atypical for Branaire by its historic standards, but it may be the direction the château seems to be headed in. The aromatics are a bit closed right now, but time in bottle should help take care of that.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is one that I was eager to re-taste in bottle. Deep in color, it has a very well-defined nose of tightly packed dark berries, the tobacco element less obvious than before, and slightly more floral, with light sous-bois notes developing with aeration. The 60% new oak is neatly integrated. The palate shows real vivacity and tension on the entry and delivers crunchy black fruit, touches of blue fruit and a little iodine. Sappy from start to finish, this has a real saline tang that urges you back for another sip. There is definitely is more substance compared to previous vintages, and I wager that this represents the best Branaire-Ducru in recent years. 13.7% alcohol

Frische, Geradlinigkeit und Mineralität

Das Lesegut für den Longitude stammt von Chardonnay-Trauben aus Premier-Cru-Lagen in Vertus, Oger, Avize und Cramant. Diese befinden sich auf gleicher Höhe und damit auf dem gleichen Längengrad (Longitude), nahe dem 4. Meridian. In Verbindung mit einer 24 Monate dauernden Hefelagerung und einer zurückhaltenden Dosage von nur 3 g/l kann dieser Champagner sehr gut die Qualitäten der einzelnen Premier Cru-Lagen zur Geltung bringen.

Dieser Blanc de Blancs bietet ein komplexes Aromenspiel auf, das an feine Kräuter sowie zartes Brioche, weiße Blüten und Steinobst erinnert. Dabei bleibt stets die Balance all dieser Eindrücke erhalten - klar und präzise aber doch auch ausgewogen. Am Gaumen legt dieser Premier Cru dann noch einen Gang zu und entfaltet sich in all seinen Eindrücken noch ausladender. Das liegt sehr an dem 40%igen Anteil an Reserve-Weinen. Interessanterweise bleiben dabei die einzelnen Komponenten wie Frucht, Würze, die Säurestruktur und die Eleganz stets greifbar. Der Longitude verliert sich zu keiner Zeit in seiner Vielschichtigkeit. Das verdankt er neben der markanten Säurestruktur sicherlich auch der überlegten Vinifikation bei Larmandier-Bernier, die sich bei der Dosage bewusst zurückhalten, um die präzisen Aromen der einzelnen PC-Lagen optimal zu bewahren. Der Name 'Longitude' verweist dann nicht zuletzt auch auf den betont langen und harmonischen Abgang.

The latest rendition of the Larmandiers' NV Longitude Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut is predictably superb. offering up scents of waxy lemon rind. crisp yellow apple. dried white flowers and fresh hazelnut. followed by a medium to full-bodied. vinous but precise palate that's pure. delicately textural and captivatingly weightless despite its undeniable intensity and concentration. concluding with a complex. mouthwateringly saline finish. It's hard to think of a better value in Champagne.

Pol Roger brut Reserve Champagner 0.75L

Elegant und raffiniert, ist die Cuvée Brut Réserve der Champagner für alle Gelegenheiten.

Der strohgelbe und feinperlige Pol Roger Brut Réserve ist in der Nase intensiv und verströmt zunächst fruchtige Aromen von Birne und Mango, die schnellergänzt werden von Geißblatt und weißem Jasmin, begleitet auch von Vanille- und Brioche-Noten. Hinter einem offenen und dynamischen Auftakt zeigt der Wein eine schöne Harmonie und eine angenehme Frische, wobei er eine gewisse Struktur bewahrt. Am Gaumen mischen sich Aromen von gekochten Früchten (Quittengelee, Aprikosenmarmelade) mit Düften von Bienenwachs und Akazienhonig. Herausragend sind die lang anhaltenden Aromen, die sich sowohl aus fruchtigen (kandierte Orangenschalen, Mandarinen...) als auch aus würzigen Noten (Kardamom, Anis) zusammensetzen.
