The 2019 Haut-Brisson is elegant and understated. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and licorice open nicely, followed by sweet floral accents that add lift. There is a bit of graininess in the tannin that lurks in the background. Otherwise this is nicely done.

The 2019 Haut Brisson was picked 27 September until 5 October at 41hl/ha and fermented in stainless steel with sulphur addition. It has a lovely. very pure bouquet. an equal measure of red and black fruit laced with a judicious amount of new oak. Just a dab of Thai fish oil in the background. The palate is actually a different kettle of fish: much edgier than the bouquet intimates with striking acidity and tension. a little gritty in texture and charcoal-like towards the finish. This is a fascinating Saint-Émilion. maybe a tad different to the Haut Brisson that I am accustomed to. I am fascinated to see which way it goes after bottling.

This estate makes an incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion. The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 65% new French oak. Coming from a beautiful terroir on the upper plateau, it reveals a deep purple/ruby color as well as perfumed cassis and mulberry fruits intermixed with ample spring flowers, chalky minerality, violets, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend. This warrants 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking.

Chateau Badette 2019 Saint Emilion

Red and black currants, tobacco, new saddle leather, chocolaty oak, and Provençal herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Badette, a ripe, opulent, seamless 2019 with loads to love. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it has lots of background oak yet balancing fruit, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's not for the old-school Claret lovers out there, but I suspect it will turn into a classic Saint-Emilion with 5-7 years of bottle age.

The Cabernet Franc-dominated 2018 Château Petit Gravet Aîné (there's 20% Merlot) comes from the upper plateau in Saint-Emilion and was raised in new French oak. It's handled its élevage nicely and has just subtle vanilla and spicy oak notes as well as impressive red, black, and blue fruits intermixed with notes of acacia flowers, spice box, forest floor, and tobacco. Tighter and more backward from bottle than barrel, it's medium to full-bodied and has a balanced, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should have two decades of overall longevity.

Hints of peppery spice, vanilla and woodsmoke accent the blueberry-scented nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and concentrated, adding hints of black cherries, chocolate and licorice on the long finish. It's hard to top this sort of quality at the suggested retail of $19.

It’s one of the finest values out there.

While not as exuberant as the aromatics, this is nicely detailed and quite poised on the finish. No, I still cannot pronounce its name, but this Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is well worth seeking out.

The 2015 Malartic Lagraviere has enjoyed a fine run of form in recent vintages. This is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot with smaller portions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has a comparatively flamboyant bouquet for the appellation with scents of raspberry, crushed strawberry, cedar and a touch of graphite that lends it a Pauillac-like veneer. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, more black than red fruit infused with pencil lead and smoke. It fans out wonderfully toward the finish, completing a wonderful Malartic Lagravière that will age with panache.

This is in an especially dark, sumptuous style, but it all works beautifully. The 2015 was positively thrilling each of the three times I tasted it.

Bodegas Atalaya Juan Gil Alaya Tierra 2022 DO Almansa

Die undurchsichtige und sehr dunkle 2021 Alaya Tierra hat eine besonnene Nase mit sehr reifen Beerenfrüchten, Noten von Tomatenrebe und einem vollmundigen und runden Paprika mit reichlichen, leicht staubigen Tanninen. Diese reifte 15 Monate in neuen französischen Eichenfässern. Es sollte sich schön in der Flasche entwickeln. 18.000 Flaschen produziert. Sie wurde im April 2023 abgefüllt.

Die alten Weinberge der Garnacha Tintorera befinden sich in einer Höhe von etwa 1.000 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel und sind auf gut durchlässigen, sandigen und kalkhaltigen Böden angepflanzt. Der Ertrag ist sehr gering und die Beeren sind sehr klein. Mazeration und Gärung im Edelstahltank, Malolaktik und anschließende Reifung für 15 Monate in französischer und zu einem kleinen Teil in amerikanischer Eiche. Intensive, lebhafte kirschrote Farbe. Interessantes und komplexes Aromen-Zusammenspiel, in dem Mineralität und sehr reife schwarze und rote Früchte hervorstechen, mit angenehmen Reminiszenzen an neues Holz. Im Mund ist er vollmundig, kraftvoll, dicht und reif, mit ausgewogener Säure und seidiger Textur, die uns mit einer originellen Süße in einem sehr langen Abgang überrascht. (Familia Gil)
