Wow. What a wine with incredible depth of fruit and generosity here. Walnut. chocolate. black olive and dark fruits. Full and rich. It goes on for minutes. Velvety texture. Best in decades. A majority of merlot with some cabernet franc and a touch of cabernet sauvignon.

The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich. sumptuous and explosive in the glass. the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous. spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

One of the most seamless, ethereal wines in the vintage, the 2018 Château La Fleur-Petrus checks in as 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot coming from a 45-acre vineyard of deep clay and gravelly soils located on the upper plateau of Pomerol. The vines average 35 years in age, and the élevage spans 16-18 months in 50% new French oak. Unquestionably in the same league as Trotanoy, Le Gay, Lafleur, Hosanna, and the other leviathans of the region, its deep purple hue is followed by a gorgeously layered, multi-dimensional 2018 with full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberry and blackcurrant fruits intermixed with spring flowers, dried herbs, and a hint of white truffle. Medium to full-bodied, with stunning symmetry and balance, its tannins are ripe and polished, and it has nicely integrated acidity as well as a great finish. Full-bodied. rich. densely packed and revealing layer upon layer of red and black fruits with an incredible array of floral and spicy sparks. it has a high level of super ripe. incredibly fine. velvety soft tannins and fantastic freshness (not just from acid but from bright. crunchy fruit). It finishes very long. marvelously layered and with such jaw-dropping brightness from the fruit. the end is almost electric. Incredible.

The 2018 Vieux Château Certan is a very pretty wine built more on elegance. finesse and aromatic nuance. Relative to the recent past. the 2018 shows a much more mid-weight structure and less of the creaminess of either 2015 or 2016. Much of that is attributable to a blend that includes 30% Cabernet Franc. Lavender. rose petal. mint and blueberry fruit all grace the 2018. Far from an obvious wine. the 2018 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. as it is a wine of total understatement and class. Fine beads of tannin support the understated finish. In 2018. VCC is a wine of refinement and subtlety more than anything else. I don't see the same visceral thrill as in a number of vintages of the recent past. Perhaps that will come in bottle.

11 Feb, 2022 – Subtle and complex with blackberries, violets, lilacs, roses and hints of ink. So floral, yet subtle on the nose. Full-bodied with incredible polish and beauty, the silky tannins running the length of the wine and going on and on. It builds with sheer elegance and structure. A blend of 78% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 7% cabernet sauvignon. Drink after 2028, but already a joy to taste.

The 2019 Vieux Château Certan is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. It is very clearly one of the highlights on the Right Bank. Soaring aromatics are immediately captivating. There is an exoticism in the 2019 that I saw from barrel that is evident in the bottled wine, but today, I see more balance and harmony. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, spice and rose petal blend into a core of red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced. The Grand Vin is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but the blend also includes one lot of young vine Cabernet Sauvignon that was added for its aromatic presence. That decision paid off in spades, as the 2019 is truly magical.

The 2019 Vieux Château Certan was picked September 23–27 and October 2–3, and matured in two-thirds new oak. Alexandre Thienpont mentioned that the 2019 includes a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon, which displayed such distinctive aromatics that he had to include it in the final blend (unlike in 2020). He pointed to a scent of immortelle, a plant that grows on sand dunes. This was stunning as a barrel sample, and there is no change in bottle. It still delivers exquisitely delineated, vivacious scents of red fruit, touches of crushed stone and a suggestion of brine. The palate is medium-bodied and classic in style, the expressive Cabernet components complementing the Merlot. There’s fine backbone here, and this VCC fans out gloriously on the finish, with a surfeit of freshness and tension. Yet unlike some recent vintages, this is a Pomerol that says "Attendez!" Give it a decade in a cellar if you know what’s good for you.
