The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe is made up of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged in 40% new. 40% one-year-old and 20% two-year-old oak for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored. it sings of roses. chocolate-covered cherries. redcurrant jelly and cinnamon stick with touches of cigar box and forest floor. Big. full-bodied and richly fruited yet with great tension. it has a compellingly perfumed palate and gorgeous velvety texture with great persistence. 5.000 cases produced.

The 2016 Tour Saint Christophe has a wonderful. beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry. raspberry. crushed stone and hints of pressed flowers. all very focused and delineated. The palate is well balanced. with fine but quite firm tannins and well-judged acidity. and very persistent toward the finish. I appreciate the harmony and intensity of this Tour Saint Christophe. A wonderful Saint-Émilion from "team Kwok"!

The 2016 Tour Saint Christophe is a potent. tightly wound wine that is going to need quite a bit of time to be at its best. That is surprising. as the 2016 was quite a bit more sensual en primeur. Even so. the 2016 is a gorgeous. hugely promising Saint-Émilion. Dark red cherry. plum. espresso. leather and tobacco build as this beautifully layered wine gradually reveals its many charms. There is so much to look forward to. once the tannins soften a bit.

The 2016 Tour Saint-Christophe. the Saint Emilion estate of Peter Kwok whose eye-catching terraced vineyard looks upon Barde-Haut from the other side of the valley. is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between 5-23 October and matured in 40% new oak. It has a sensual bouquet with black cherries and cassis scents. the new oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet and supple tannin. a little richer than the 2015 and yet still managing to translate the terroir with aplomb. Tasted twice. one bottle showed a little more precision than the other. but I remain confident that this will turn into a Saint Emilion worth investigating.

The 2016 Tour Saint Christophe is gorgeous. Exotic. ripe and voluptuous. the 2016 possesses striking aromatics and plenty of presence. Smoke. grilled herbs. inky dark fruit. crème de cassis and leather are beautifully delineated in the glass. This is the first recent vintage I can remember tasting that is not overextracted. There is a real expression of fruit. Suffice it to say. this is a very positive development for the château. Michel Rolland is the consultant. Tasted two times.

Composed of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc and aged for 18 months in 70% new French barriques. the 2016 Canon is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. and—WOW—it opens with the most stunning perfume of violets. red roses and kirsch. giving way to a core of black cherry preserves. chocolate box. licorice. warm plums and Chinese five spice plus an earthy waft of underbrush. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is completely filled with expressive. perfumed black berry layers accented by lively red fruits and exotic spices. supported by impressively fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension. finishing very long with jaw-dropping energy. Tasted three times. I had one opportunity to taste the 2015 and 2016 Canon side by side. While I love the bold. rich. seductive nature of the 2015. this 2016 kicks it up a notch in terms of polish. precision. depth and persistence. Most notably. the superbly ripe. exquisitely fine-grained tannins on this 2016 bring to the table a whole other level of sophistication. Bravo!

The 2016 Canon has the unenviable task of following the astonishing 2015. and it does a damn good job. even if it doesn’t reach the same ethereal heights. There is a pleasing strictness and poise on the nose; this is less immediate than the 2015. yet intellectual. a Canon that expresses its terroir rather than tons of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. a fine bead of acidity. a smooth texture and a slightly savory but persistent finish. which feels a little plusher than the 2015. implying that this might drink a little earlier. But there is unquestionably immense breeding locked into this rejuvenated Saint-Émilion. which is now firmly ensconced among the top-flight Right Banks.

This has a very attractive. ripe black-fruit nose with toasted spices. violets and dark-stone notes. Iodine and cedar. too. The palate is powerful and has quite intense flavors of blackberries and blueberries with a super rich and ripe frame of tannin that carries long and expands the finish in impressive style. The 2017 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is powerful and backward. with huge tannins wrapped around a core of black cherry. smoke. charcoal. licorice. blackberry jam and graphite. Exotic and rich in the glass. the 2017 needs time to soften. but it is immensely promising. not to mention utterly captivating. Tasted three times.

Chateau Barde Haut 2016 Saint Emilion

Readers will find a rich. flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here. but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks. graphite. lavender. blackberry. plum. and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all. the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent. dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it.

Chateau Figeac 2016 Saint Emilion

The 2016 Figeac is comprised of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon. 36% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored. the nose is a little broody and reticent at this very youthful stage. slowly unfolding to reveal profound plum preserves. crème de cassis. black raspberries and star anise with hints of moss-covered bark. truffles and tilled loam plus a waft of red currants and raspberry leaves sparks. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is practically quivering with energy. offering glimpses at tightly wound black fruit and mineral/ferrous layers. framed by very firm. ripe tannins and wonderful tension. finishing long with the spices coming through. This will need a good 7-8 years to come round and then should cellar for 40+ years. Very serious. beautifully poised and sophisticated personality this vintage.

“There was a little more water stress in 2016 than in 2018.” Frédéric Faye mentioned. “The cooler nights here helped us to avoid too much water stress this year. We are not de-leafing a lot now—just on one side to expose the grapes to the morning sun. but we do not de-leaf on the afternoon sun side. where it can get very hot.” Figeac continues along its upward trajectory in terms of heights of greatness and consistency. Faye has adeptly managed to maintain the energy in the wines that is a signature of Figeac while revealing more layers. polishing the tannins and. ultimately. offering slightly more muscle to the fruit core. Once his considerable efforts in the vineyards really kick in and the new winery is completed. I am incredibly excited to see what the future holds for this historic. truly special place.

The 2016 Figeac is simply extraordinary. A wine of pure energy and vitality. the 2016 pulses with a real sense of drive. Lavender. mint. crème de cassis and cedar start to develop in the glass. but what is most remarkable about the 2016 is its total sense of harmony. There is natural tension. a sort of push and pull. between the wine's intense fruit and structural underpinnings that makes the 2016 a marvel to taste and contemplate. It was positively stunning in two separate tastings. Technical Director Frédéric Faye and his team made an epic Figeac in 2016.
