The palate is very plush and smoothly arranged with a very attractive weave of ripe. supple tannin and a long. fresh and fleshy hold on the finish. The tannins are discreet but deceptively long here. The 2017 Lafleur-Petrus is elegant. polished and wonderfully refined from start to finish. Everything just falls into place effortlessly. Aromatic. sculpted fruit gives the 2017 its sense of regal beauty and total finesse. Beautifully lifted and precise. it is framed by gentle. silky tannins. Small red berries. mint. blood orange. spice and licorice develop in the glass. but it is the wine's cashmere-like softness that impresses most. In 2017 Lafleur-Petrus is a real standout.

A blend of 93% Merlot. 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 la Fleur-Petrus is a little youthfully reticent to begin. opening to offer glimpses at kirsch. black raspberries and warm plums plus nuances of potpourri. powdered cinnamon. dusty soil and dried lavender. Medium-bodied. the palate is finely knit and elegant with a firm frame of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness. finishing long and mineral laced.

Medium to full-bodied. firm. grainy and with great freshness. the sturdy frame supports generous black and blue fruits with earthy accents and fantastic length.

The 2017 La Fleur-Pétrus has the most expressive and flamboyant bouquet from the J-P Moueix range and I can see why Edouard Moueix is smitten by its early showings. There is a mélange of red and black fruit. crushed violet and a distant tang of the sea (or should that be the Dordogne river?) The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannin. quite rich of the vintage but not overpowering or glossy. delivering a velvety smooth second-half that caresses the senses and leaves you utterly beguiled. If am to quibble. it just misses a little complexity and nuance on the finish but otherwise...très bon vin.

There’s a striking sense of deeply ripe plums on the nose. as well as notes of forest wood. black truffle. wet earth and sous bois. The palate has regal tannin shape and texture. Quite powerful but supple. the tannins carry long and fresh with ripe dark-plum flavors. Try from 2022.

The 2017 Certan de May is a powerful. dense wine. Graphite. smoke. grilled herbs and dark red and purplish fruit confer a real sense of gravitas that also comes through in the wine's unctuous fruit and overall richness. The 2017 packs a serious punch. that is for sure. Although not the last word in finesse. Certan de May offers plenty of richness and body. It is one of the bigger Pomerols of the year. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften.

The 2017 Certan de May is a blend of 60% Merlot. 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color. the wine charges out of the gate with bold expressions of preserved plums. blueberry compote and redcurrant jelly plus nuances of pencil shavings. forest floor and truffles. Medium-bodied. the palate delivers elegantly played black fruits and earthy accents with a lovely frame of fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness. finishing with a quiet intensity.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2017 Pomerol

Possibly the wine of the vintage
The 2017 Vieux Chateau Certan is a blend of 81% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from the highest point on the Pomerol plateau. Deep purple, with a heavenly bouquet of creme de cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, crushed violets, tobacco, and earth, this beauty is full-bodied, has incredible depth of fruit, ripe, present tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This estate has been on fire of late, and this is undoubtedly a worthy follow-on to the otherworldly 2015 and 2016. It has the depth of fruit and texture to offer pleasure even today, yet a solid 7-8 years of cellaring are warranted, and it should be long-lived. Bravo!

Composed of 80% Merlot. 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. the 2017 Vieux Château Certan sports a deep garnet-purple color. No mincing about. the bouquet absolutely prances out of the glass with stunning scents of candied violets. chocolate-covered cherries. roses and eucalyptus over a core of black plum preserves. mulberries. black raspberries and blueberry pie plus wafts of licorice. iron ore and truffles. Medium to full-bodied. the palate has fantastic balance and expression. with very fine-grained. silt-like tannins and well-knit freshness. finishing with epic length and perfume.

The purity and complexity is so mesmerizing for 2017. Raspberries and black fruit with sweet-tobacco and blood-orange undertones. Medium to full body. The tannins are so polished and pure and push out the edges on the wine. Fresh and pretty. Deep. Needs two or three years to perfect it. Try after 2023.

Inky blue and purplish fruit. chocolate. licorice. lavender. spice and mint come together in a dense. dark and powerful Pomerol. The 2017 is an explosive. vivid wine of monastic beauty. In this vintage. VCC is especially dark and somber. which adds to a real feeling of mysterious beauty. It is a towering achievement from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont.
