The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar.

Another brilliant Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Canon actually reminds me of the 2019 with its pure, elegant, yet concentrated profile. Based on 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, it reveals a deep ruby hue as well as classic upper plateau notes of perfumed red and black fruits (black raspberries, darker cherries), wildflowers, graphite, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, perfectly integrated tannins and acidity, and flawless overall balance. As with the 2019, it's not the blockbuster style of the 2015, but it’s lively, elegant, and pure class. It needs 7-8 years of bottle age to hit maturity and will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity.

Managing tannins is one of the lines that needed walking in 2020, and the warmer soils of Quinault compared to Cheval needed particular care. You find some traces of the solar nature of the summer on the nose, with eucalyptus, black pepper and rosemary spice, but there is freshness on the palate, well balanced and with density to the blackberry and black cherry fruits, finishing up with again the eucalyptus that is found in the aromatics, and a generous kick of spice. This is tightly structured, it is expertly handled but I would suggest looking to the 2019. Harvest September 3 to 23. 10 days over 30°C during that time.

Composed of 50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Pavie weighs in with an alcohol of 14.82% and a pH of 3.61. It is aging in French oak barriques, 75% new. Opaque purple-black colored, notes of plum pudding, blueberry pie and dark chocolate-covered cherries charge out of the gate, followed closely by hints of eucalyptus, star anise, unsmoked cigars and fertile loam with a hint of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, offering very firm yet wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and seamless freshness to support the densely laden, muscular black and blue fruits, finishing very long and with loads of mineral-laced layers. As hedonic as it is cerebral this year, it is a beautiful paradox.

The 2020 Pavie was picked September 21–30 at 31hl/ha and matured in 75% new oak, the rest one year old. It continues to see greater emphasis on Cabernets – 34% Franc and 16% Sauvignon, the Merlot reduced to half the blend. This gradual rejigging of the blend is borne out on the nose, which features hints of damp loamy soil and bell pepper infusing vivid blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, becoming more and more citrusy with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sautéed tannins that gently grip. Powerful, but the 14.82° alcohol is neatly disguised on the finish (at least in tasting measure) with fine delineation. Cohesive and focused. I would like to see a little more personality develop during élevage, but this remains an impressive Saint-Émilion and a Pavie with a long future ahead.

The 2020 Troplong Mondot may prove to be even better than the brilliant 2019, and it is one of the Right Bank's finest wines in this vintage. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of mulberries, blackberries and red cherries mingled with hints of rose petal, licorice and exotic spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a satiny attack that segues into a vibrant, polished mid-palate, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Having seen only 65% new oak and with malolactic fermentation completed in tank rather than in barrel, it's remarkably pure and seamless. With the 2020 vintage, this estate's stylistic redemption appears to be complete.

A clear step up over the 2019, the 2020 Château Troplong Mondot is mostly Merlot yet includes 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, all of which was raised in 65% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. The level of purity and finesse here is remarkable, and it reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, gunpowder, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has building, perfectly ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Certainly light years away from the riper, more opulent style of the 2000's, the wines today under consultant Thomas Duclos are much more about finesse and elegance. While I certainly miss the sexy, riper style of the past, there is no denying the incredible quality from this château today.

This sapid, complex wine represents the essence of this great terroir. Two years after extensive soil studies of the estate were carried out, and the first growing season to see cover crops used in the vineyards year-round, the 2020 benefited from more coherently demarcated parcels and more precise élevage, which taken together help to account for its edge over the excellent 2019.

Straight-up awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, iron, spring flowers, and an almost bloody, salty character emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied, with a seamless mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and absolutely perfectly integrated oak. It's still tight and reserved, which is certainly the vintage, so do your best to hide these in the cellar. It should hit the early stages of its prime drinking window in 8-10 years and will have 30+ of overall longevity. It will unquestionably flirt with perfection at maturity.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Belair-Monange is also 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc that's a blend of the upper limestone plateau and the more clay heavy soils on the hillside. Very much in the tight, structured style of the vintage, its dense purple hue is followed by a great nose of ripe black cherries, black raspberries, dried flowers, loamy earth, and camphor, with a beautiful sense of minerality. Opening up with time in the glass, it's full-bodied, has a deep, layered mouthfeel, gorgeous overall balance, and a great finish. It offers pleasure today but will benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.

Much more closed and backward now from bottle, the 2020 Château Clos Fourtet is nevertheless a brilliant Saint-Emilion that ranks with the crème de la crème of the vintage. A blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, its deep purple hue is followed by an incredibly pure, classic Saint-Emilion bouquet of darker cherry and cassis-like fruit as well as chalky minerality, lead pencil shavings, and white flowers. Concentrated, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it has perfectly integrated oak, an incredible sense of minerality, good acidity, and a great finish. It's going to need a solid decade of bottle age but will evolve for 30-40+ years in cold cellars. The Château deserves far more attention in the market today as they’re consistently producing some of the greatest wines in a vintage.

Incredibly pure cassis and blueberry fruits as well as complex spring flowers, liquid violets, white truffle, and a liqueur of limestone-like minerality define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, the vintage's pure, focused, structured profile, and a great finish. As in most vintages, this beauty is not for instant gratification and needs 7-8 years, if not a decade of cellaring to show its potential. It's another true vin de garde from the team of Nicolas Thienpont (Stéphane Derenoncourt also consults) that readers will love to have in their cellar.

TDer Grand Vin stammt aus einem winzigen 11,15 Hektar großen Weinberg, der seit 1893 im Besitz der Familie Gratiot ist. Er befindet sich an der südlich ausgerichteten Côte Pavie, zwischen Château Pavie und Château Bellefont-Belcier, und besteht aus Ton auf Kalksteinböden. Der Weinberg wird derzeit mit einer massalen Selektion und einer höheren Pflanzdichte neu bepflanzt. Die Trauben werden von Hand sortiert, die Vinifikation erfolgt ausschließlich in Beton und dauert vier Wochen, der Ausbau erfolgt in 50% neuem französischen Eichenholz. Eine normale Mischung aus 90% Merlot und 10% Cabernet Franc, erinnert mich der 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse an den 2005er und gehört zu den besten Weinen am rechten Ufer. Er hat ein brillantes Parfum von roten und schwarzen Früchten, weißen Trüffeln, blättrigem Tabak und asiatischen Gewürzen. Eine schöne Leistung, die sinnlicher und nahtloser ist als Thienponts strukturierterer, düsterer Pavie Macquin. Der 2020 Larcis Ducasse entfaltet sich im Glas mit Aromen von Kirschen, Brombeeren, Lorbeerblatt, Rosenblättern und Lakritze. Strahlen von Tannin und Säure geben dem Wein seine Form. Dunkle Kirsch- und Granatapfelfrucht treten hervor, mit einem Hauch von Blutorangensäure, die Frische verleiht. Graphit, getrocknete Kräuter, Menthol, Gewürze und Zeder treten mit etwas Überredung hervor, aber der 2020er ist sehr jung und sehr primär. Das verheißt natürlich eine großartige Zukunft. Der 2020er ist schlichtweg ein aufregender Larcis und eines der besten Angebote in ganz Bordeaux.

Sowohl William Kelley vom Wineadvocate als auch Antonio Galloni von Vinous haben das Chateau Franc Mayne im JG 2020 dramatisch aufgewertet gegenüber den verhaltenen Fassproben. Bei Parker ging es von 91-93 rauf auf glatte 94 Punkte und bei Antonio Galloni von Vinous sogar noch dramatisch mehr. Von 89-91 Punkten als Fassmuster auf glatte 96 Punkte, es gibt sehr wenige Weine die das überhaupt jemals geschafft haben. Auffällig ist das sich beim Chateau Franc Mayne viele Verkoster einig sind, dass die jüngst erzeugten Qualitäten hier massiv nach oben zeigen, 

Auch ich konnte den Franc Mayne 2020 auf der Prowein in Düsseldorf nachverkosten und ich kann Ihnen versichern es ist kein Zufall, dass die Verkoster das Weingut neu und höher bewerten. Es geht hier wirklich bergauf, wollen wir hoffen, dass die Preise nicht so kometenhaft steigen wie die gebotene Qualität.

It's worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in just 35% new French oak, it has a sensational perfume of red and black cherries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, lead pencil shavings, and liquid violet-like nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, it has ultra-fine tannins, remarkable purity, and a great finish. This wine comes from an 18-hectare vineyard that was purchased by Peter Kwok in 1997, only to be sold in 2020 to Bordeaux native Stéphane Schinazi. The soils here are a mix of fine gravel and granular, quartz-rich silt atop a deep clay subsoil. The farming has been certified organic since 2010, vinification spans just over three weeks in stainless steel, and the wine sees malolactic fermentation in tank and four months on lees before being moved into 35% new French oak, 35% second-fill, and the balance in third-fill barrels.

98 The 2020 Château Trotte Vieille has closed down since I tasted it as a barrel sample in 2021 and needs lots of air, but this is an incredibly gorgeous wine. Its dense purple hue is followed by powerful, inward bouquet of ripe, incredibly pure black and blue fruits, smoky oak, tons of minerality, and a kiss of violets that takes lots of air to shine. The palate is similar in style, with a concentrated, focused, almost austere edge that carries beautiful tannins, awesome extract, flawless overall balance, and a great finish. While it's unquestionably a brilliant wine, it's not for those looking for instant gratification and is much more reserved than the 2019 at this stage. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it should have 25 to 30 years of overall longevity.

From an estate that has been on an incredible run of late, largely due to the talents of director David Suire, the 2020 Château Laroque shows the cooler, limestone-driven style of the terroir beautifully and has a clean, focused style in its darker (almost blue) berry fruits as well as chalky minerality, violets, spice, and floral nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, this focused, straight, remarkably pure Saint-Emilion has terrific mid-palate depth and a great finish. It needs to be hidden in the cellar for a solid 4-5 years if possible and is going to have 30 years of longevity. If drinking any time soon, give it an hour in a decanter.

It has a ripe bouquet of blackberry and raspberry fruit, plus touches of plum jam and subtle undergrowth, almost mulch-like scents. The palate is fleshy and open on the entry, framed by distinctly malleable tannins and a plush yet controlled finish with a dash of white pepper and sage. I suspect that this Saint-Émilion will drink earlier than its peers, yet it has the substance to give up to 15, possibly 20 years of drinking pleasure.

Straffe und sehr feine Tannine, die sich über die gesamte Länge des Weins erstrecken. Am Ende entfaltet sich der Wein. So frisch und energisch. Tanninhaltig im Abgang mit feiner Textur. TDer Grand Vin stammt aus einem winzigen 11,15 Hektar großen Weinberg, der seit 1893 im Besitz der Familie Gratiot ist. Er befindet sich an der südlich ausgerichteten Côte Pavie, zwischen Château Pavie und Château Bellefont-Belcier, und besteht aus Ton auf Kalksteinböden. Der Weinberg wird derzeit mit einer massalen Selektion und einer höheren Pflanzdichte neu bepflanzt. Die Trauben werden von Hand sortiert, die Vinifikation erfolgt ausschließlich in Beton und dauert vier Wochen, der Ausbau erfolgt in 50% neuem französischen Eichenholz. Eine normale Mischung aus 90% Merlot und 10% Cabernet Franc, erinnert mich der 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse an den 2005er und gehört zu den besten Weinen am rechten Ufer. Er hat ein brillantes Parfum von roten und schwarzen Früchten, weißen Trüffeln, blättrigem Tabak und asiatischen Gewürzen. Dies führt zu einem vollmundigen, konzentrierten, kraftvollen Larcis-Ducasse mit ultrafeinen, aber aufbauenden Tanninen, perfekter Balance, einem kompakten Mittelgaumen und einem großartigen Abgang. In 7-8 Jahren wird er beinahe perfekt sein (wahrscheinlich bewerte ich ihn um einen Punkt zu niedrig) und hat eine Gesamtlebensdauer von 30 Jahren. Mehrfach mit konstanten Ergebnissen verkostet

Eine schöne Leistung, die sinnlicher und nahtloser ist als Thienponts strukturierterer, düsterer Pavie Macquin. Der 2020 Larcis Ducasse entfaltet sich im Glas mit Aromen von Kirschen, Brombeeren, Lorbeerblatt, Rosenblättern und Lakritze. Mittel- bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und konzentriert, mit feinen Tanninen, lebhaften Säuren und einem geschmeidigen, fleischigen Profil, endet er mit einem langen, expansiven Abgang. Dies ist ein besonderer Erfolg im Jahr 2020. Unter der Leitung von Nicolas Thienpont und David Suire seit 2002 nimmt Larcis Ducasse einen 11 Hektar großen Block neben Pavie ein. Rund 15% des Weinbergs befinden sich auf dem Plateau am oberen Ende des Hangs, aber diese Parzellen werden derzeit umstrukturiert und tragen vorerst nur einen kleinen Teil zur Mischung bei, sodass es sich wirklich um einen "vin de coteaux" handelt—einen Wein von den Hängen. Die Böden bestehen hauptsächlich aus Molasses du Fronsadais-Ton über Kalkstein, aber eine Vielfalt von Expositionen und Schichten bedeutet, dass dies ein von Natur aus komplexes Terroir ist. Wie entlang der gesamten Côte de Pavie sickern Quellen durch den Weinberg, sodass Larcis Ducasse kühle, hydratisierte Böden mit einem warmen Mesoklima und einer sonnigen Exposition kombiniert. Geschmeidig und nahtlos ist Larcis weniger spannungsvoll und prägnant als Pavie Macquin vom Plateau darüber, neigt jedoch dazu, mit der Flaschenreife komplexe Aromen von schwarzem Trüffel zu entwickeln und endet typischerweise mit einem mundwässernden salinen Abgang. Der Larcis Ducasse 2020 ist ein echter Hingucker. Hell und vertikal im Gefühl, besitzt der 2020er eine enorme Energie, die zu seinem superklassischen Aufbau passt. Strahlen von Tannin und Säure geben dem Wein seine Form. Dunkle Kirsch- und Granatapfelfrucht treten hervor, mit einem Hauch von Blutorangensäure, die Frische verleiht. Graphit, getrocknete Kräuter, Menthol, Gewürze und Zeder treten mit etwas Überredung hervor, aber der 2020er ist sehr jung und sehr primär. Das verheißt natürlich eine großartige Zukunft. Der 2020er ist schlichtweg ein aufregender Larcis und eines der besten Angebote in ganz Bordeaux.
